So, it's my 21st birthday soon, and I've got a $1200 saving that I have to close... so upgrade tiem?

I'm thinking processor, 4gb or ram + vid card;

  • Is it still good to go for a Xeon? How much further can they be pushed? (If I remember they have more transistors and take a lower voltage, right?)
  • Also I kinda need 4gb of ram, what with Vista now... also doing video work means lots of ram usage :(
  • Video card - good for hardware video decoding, not bothered about game performance.
  • Mobo upgrade if necessary - then I could sell the old stuff as a bundle... ;)

Suggestions welcome guys B:)

Edit: I don't want to spend all of that money :lol: Maybe amount to $800 max... cheaper the better ;)

You might want to wait for the new Nvidia cards which are scheduled to be released soon. As for a processor, the Q6600 is the best bang for the buck right now.

if the video apps you're using make use of SMP, I have two Q6600's that I bought with the intention of finding a lower VID... on 680i it's hard work to OC C2Q's... but even with the 1.325v VID, I am running 3.6GHz and have my RAM at 4-4-4-12-1T... for SMP apps it's MASSIVE processing power...

seeing as you have an Intel chipset, you'll get 3.6GHz on air easily (much easier than me lol), and could probably push it further if you were willing to use high performance air...

for video decoding, all you need is a card that does HD/h264 processing... for ATi its called AVIVO, and for nVidia its called PureVideo... make sure the version actually supports HD/h264 as previous versions of PureVideo only do MPEG1/2 processing, for example...

so, the lowest end 8 series nVidia card can do the same video processing as the highest of the series, only difference is for 3D... I think you'll find PureVideo is more widely support in apps than AVIVO (yes, it's app dependent)

do you really need 45nm and a new board? I think a quad core and more RAM will make the biggest difference

I was thinking about getting a 3850/3870 and doing the FireGL V7700 softmod.... has anyone here tried that?

Yeah, a q6600 looks like the best option right now, with some decent ram...

4850 and 4870 are supposedly hitting sometime this month. I would assume that's a worldwide release (generally new cards have similar availability on both sides of the Atlantic, unless I've missed something?).

Softmod capability is obviously something that can't be determined until the cards are out there.

Assuming new firegl cards use the same cores as the mainstream cards (as they have tended to do in the past), I don't see it being that implausible. You might have to wait for a bit though.
