Nemo Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I'm trying to help my brother resolve an issue he is having with his laptop no longer recognizing his wireless mouse. He has a Fujitsu N6210 running Windows XP SP2, fully patched. The mouse had been working fine until just recently. His laptop was running off the battery and went into stand by mode when the battery got low. After he plugged the laptop back into the charger, it would no longer recognize the wireless mouse and he began getting a warning bubble with the message: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message." Device Manager shows an "Unknown Device" error message for the USB root hub the wireless adapter is plugged into. Once the adapter is removed the error goes away. So far we have tried the following to no avail: 1) Bought a new wireless mouse and tried it - same error 2) Tested both old and new mice on another laptop and a desktop, both work fine. 3) Tested all three USB ports successfully using a USB printer and a USB flash drive. 4) Attempted to have Windows update the drivers through the Properties window for the root hub controller (no newer driver found). 5) Uninstalled all USB controllers and root hubs in device manager and rebooted. 6) Uninstalled all USB controllers and root hubs in device manager and power cycled the laptop. 7) Uninstalled all USB controllers and root hubs in device manager and turned off the computer and pulled the battery for several minutes before rebooting. 8) Uninstalled all USB controllers and root hubs in device manager while the wireless adapter was plugged in and turned off the computer and pulled the battery for several minutes before re-booting. The only thing I haven't tried was updating the chipset drivers as I didn't want to risk additional problems unless absolutely necessary. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them. swifty11212 Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 can you force the usb controller to run in usb1.1 mode temporarily and then try it in 2.0?
Nemo Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 can you force the usb controller to run in usb1.1 mode temporarily and then try it in 2.0? I'm not sure I know how to force it to 1.1 - I thought that was an auto-negotiate thing handled by the driver?
Waco Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Sounds like a wonky USB controller to me. I had one that did something similar with a USB hard drive enclosure, replacing the USB controller fixed it. Obviously in a laptop this won't work though...
Nemo Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 That's what I have been thinking, but I wanted to exhaust all possible avenues before I suggest taking it back to Fry's for repair. The very thought of those mouth-breathers getting hold of the laptop scares the crap out of me.
Silverfox Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Can you reinstall chipset drivers for the laptop? Long shot ..
Nemo Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 That's the next move - actually I'm going to have him reinstall the USB controller drivers from the Intel web site and if that fails I may have him try a Windows repair install. After I made the original post, I had him copy the Windows mouse drivers and the USB stack drivers from another machine and that didn't help.
