steelie Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 Thanks for all the help in my previous post about building a gaming and multimedia rig. This is my first attempt at putting together a computer that will rock anything a mass manufacturer puts out at a severly inflated price. This is what I plan to go with: case: ThermalTake III Xaser 1000D $150 mobo: Asus A7N8X Deluxe $130 cpu: AMD Athlon 2600 2.08 GHz only 256kb cache but is 512kb cache worth it? $150 hd: Western Digital Special Edition 120Gb 8MB Cache:D

RC03 Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 Just a suggestion but maybe you should get the 2400 instead of the 2600 because if you are going to overclock the system anyway you might as well get the 2400 because it is the same core as the 2600 and OCs the same. It would save you some money and help you buy some better ram or other component. I know there is a 2100 that is based on the same core as the 2400-2800 (Tbred B High End) but there is no guarantee that you will get the right core if you went with that processor. If you went with the 2400 you are guaranteed because they don't make it in any other core type. Just my two cents.
andrusk Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 sounds like a good system to me, however i heard that the 9500 performs better than the 9600, but im not completely sure.
battery Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 looks great but i would either get the 2500+ barton or the 2800+ barton or you could get the new 3200+ barton that came out and that is way overpriced=)
steelie Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 The 2500 barton has some serious onboard cache compared to the 2600 i am looking at but it is slower in GHz Can the barton 2500 be overclocked to match the 2600's speed if I used it instead? Will I notice a difference if I use the 2600 or the 2500 barton? The 2500 barton is 25 bucks cheaper than the 2600. Which processor will be better overall in my machine? Bassdude1000 Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 get the slower barton, the bigger cache really helps out. and go w/ a 9500 pro rather than 9600, it performs better.
Mercury Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 ati 9500, i would keep the cpu as is... get some better ram, and you will be good to go
General912 Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 I would get the 9500, for CPU im thinking about the barton but im not sure yet. Its a week before my next pay check so i got some time to think about it.
Overclocker16 Posted May 14, 2003 Posted May 14, 2003 Get the 2500+ Barton. And I have heard you can OC it to 3000+ (or more) on air.
