ostoles Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 Am looking to submerg my motherboard and cards in hydrofluoroether (HFE-7100) and then using a phase change cooling system (like that in a refrigerator) to cool the ether to -10 to 0 C. I am however wondering if anyone has any suggestions/hints/tips etc that would direct me to more information on these types of cooling systems. I am wondering if anyone knows the max lowest temp a motherboard can withstand and if there would be any harmful affects this would cause on any of the computer eq. Anyway, i look forward to any comments/suggestions that this will generate as i havent seen any other posts similar to this one. -Ostoles
Overclocker16 Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 If you have the money, go with liquid nitrogen. Keep a supply of liquid nitrogen since it evaporates. As far as submission. Unless you are going to do hard core oc'ing then it isn't worth it. Also, price is going to be huge. I would suggest a Vapochill with the watercooling kit that fits in it. Horatio Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 Yea Vaphochill rocks as shown here. http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDIy
ostoles Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 I am actually looking for something that will not need regular intervention on my part and having to refill the liquid nitrogen would require that. Plus the ether i want to use turns solid at -191 C and liquid nitrogen is -196 C so thats not really an option as it would clog any pumps/pipes used. I have looked at Vapochill and the only concerns I have about it are: condensation buildup, if it would work on intel xeon processors, and if i could somehow get it to work on my video card aswell (last is not required although would be nice). A partial reason for the submersion is to eliminate condensation on the board and cards. Not to mention this is a dual processor board so i would need multiple vapochill products to cool both the same amount. -Ostoles
Overclocker16 Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 You never said dual before. Why do you need this super cooling? Unless it is a super computer, I think watercooling would be just fine.
ostoles Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 For the fun of it. To show off a bit aswell I guess. Plus its fun to do unusual projects. I guess I like my stuff to be somewhat out of the ordinary. -Ostoles
Muninn Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 I'm almost finished with my submerged comp....seriously, the HFE doesn't need any extreem cooling, your board isn't going to heat it up enough for you to know the difference, the only problem i've herd of is that you have to have the case airtight because of water condensation and HFE evaporaton...i don't know still looking into it. Yeah its fun and all but its a little overboard. Unless you are looking to push your comp beyond all reasonalbe limits i'd just go with water cooling. To be honest this submerged MOBO/CUP/VGA project of mine is becoming a pain in my .. Just a heads up. Muninn
justinal Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 muninn can you post some pics id really like to see that..
Muninn Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 Yeah, i'm still getting the fine tuning of the enclosure worked out. Has to be air tight because the HFE evaporates. Its quite an undertaking, i don't think i'm gonna throw the vapochill in the mix though, just don't have that kindof money right now. Also hafta get a digi camera... uhg... so much to do, so little time. Gimme a week and i think i'll have pics up.
