Outer_Limits Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 I'm on a budget computer build, and I was wondering if the Via processors are any good. I would like to know if you can overclock them, if one motherboard is better than another for them, or if they have any reported problems. Thanks

andrusk Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 i think actually with some of the little tiny motherboards that have really small form factors that they use like a 900mhz via processor, dont know anything about it though, i have seen it at frys though. Cyclonite Posted May 11, 2003 Posted May 11, 2003 yes via came out with cpu's old one's though i don't know about oc them but for the rest, fine cpu for normal use so no extreme games/benchmarks there for homeshopping use and stuf so if you are building a pc for your girlfriend so she can surf the net and play simple games like solitaire ok good idee silent (don't need a fan so passive cooling ) nice for a small gateway server and stuff have fun <_<

Propane Posted May 13, 2003 Posted May 13, 2003 this is just a little tidbid - via makes a CPU that needs no fan/heat sink. Kinda cool if you ask me (no pun intended)
sYstEmATiC Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 (edited) yeah the biggest ive seen them is like 900 mhz. its called a C3 and looks a lot like the amd K6-2 processors, you know with the big silver thing on it. oh and one more thing....if i remember right, you can put them in an intel socket 370 board, the ones for the pIII's. dont take my word for it though, you might want to check first. exeter_acres Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Outer.... looks like you are on the right track...up your budget slightltly get a 1700+ for $45 at Newegg and a decent mobo for $75 and that will get you up and running and the 1700 (if it is a t-bred B) can be madly overclocked!! General912 Posted June 21, 2003 Posted June 21, 2003 Actully VIA cpus go up to 1.0ghz. not that bad considering you dont need a hs. probly nice for a server. I think they run on socket 370 mobos but you gotta have a via chipset. kinda sucks. i could live with it but now that i got my athlon 2500+ i wouldent wana down grade hehe.
