O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 I just wanted to know why the A7N8X motherboard northbridge controller has a good heatsink but the southbridge controller has no type of cooling. Does it matter?
bishop245 Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 i have never seen a heatsink on the southbridge of anyboard unless the user put 1 there
RVE Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 Same here, never seen one with a heatsink of any kind even when reading reviews from some of the newest mobo's coming out.
justinal Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 i dont think the southbridge gets as hot so i dont really think it matters
Judas Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 I also believe it's not nessecery, but I saw the new Epox uses one
bishop245 Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 well thats the first time i have seen a southbridge with a heatsink still dont think its that important though
Judas Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 Right, I guess it would be better to have active cooling on the Norhtbridge like Abit. Or use a Vantec Iceberg or something, cause the Northbridge runs extrmely hot when you OC high, and this affects the mobo temp as well. andrusk Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 (edited) you dont need one on the southbridge cause the southbridge doesnt control any of the buses that you overclock. such as sound card, usb, firewire, keyboard and mouse etc.... which doesnt require that fast(thus not as hot) of a bus. epox probably just put that there to make you think your getting something cool my 2 cents. Will Smith Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 (edited) That is correct. Norethbridge builds up extreme heat. South bridge has barely any heat if any. If you want to put a pretty heatsink and fan on your south bridge go ahead by all means but u will not notice any real temp changes and performance changes by doing so. Just a waste of money. If you want put active cooling on the north bridge and if you are really pressed on the south bridge get passive cooling on it but thats only if u want to splurge. emunger Posted May 29, 2003 Posted May 29, 2003 (edited) A blanket statement like southbridge does not need cooling is incorrect. For example, if I run at 190Mhz or greater I get no sound at all in Windows XP SP1 and when I touch the southbridge its very very hot whereas the northbridge HS is only warm. If I run at 189Mhz I do get sound. Well since the sound processor is in the southbridge I obviously need some cooling on the southbridge if I want to run at 190Mhz or greater. Now the latest BIOS 1004 for rev 1.04 boards (which I have) officially supports 200Mhz for Barton CPUs, I don't understand why my southbridge is heating up so much. Barton or no Barton I'm sure I would not get any sound if I booted at 190 Mhz. Since some people are able to run at 200Mhz right out of the box without any extra chipset cooling, some southbridge chips must be made better than others. I would like to put some passive cooling on the southbridge in a way that will not void the warranty. Any suggestions? Any suggestions? what mobo do you have? if your southbridge is hot i suggest getting the vantec iceberq cooler, it comes with an active northbridge cooler and 2 copper heatsinks, one of those heatsinks fits perfectly on the southbridge, i put one on my southbridge and it does get a little warm, i haven't figured out what to do with the other heatsink, it fits on the northbridge but it already comes with the big cooling fan so i guess it's just an extra option
