mxrider623 Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 I re-formatted and am trying to re install my OS. the problem is the only boot disk that will work for some reason is my XP but I have the upgrade so I need to install a previous one but none of them will work. I have tried 95 and 98 SE both of them are genuwine copy's meaning they werent burned versions or anything. I have no clue what in the hell to do but toss my HDD in the trash and buy a new one! <_

smeghead009 Posted May 8, 2003 Posted May 8, 2003 boot from the XP CD and instal it normally, even if its the upgrade you can do this, but it will ask you to put in another version of windows CD to make sure you have another version

mxrider623 Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 Well I got it installed and I did it using an older computer so I toook it out and went to put it back in my other one and fired it up and now it says: A disk read error occured press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart
localguru Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 why can't you boot off a floppy and install win98?
exeter_acres Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 Is the system that you are trying to install into (that doesn't work) overclocked.... maybe this drive doesn't like OC'd bus???
mxrider623 Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 Ok the only way I would be able to boot into Windows was if I put another drive in and put the one with my OS as the slave. I was really startin to get frustrated so I took it to one of my friends at the local computer shop and he hooked it up to 2 different systems and he kept getting the same disk read error so I took it back home to reformat and try again only this time none of my computers are even seeing the drive whether they are master or slave! I would RMA it but I got it from someone who buys stuff for me cause he gets it cheap and I don't have any papers or anything for it so I doubt I would get very far. And no my system is not overclocked and my floppy drive doesn't work.
Mercury Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 actually you dont need any papers to get a RMA, i beleive, just the serial number on the hard drive?w
bishop245 Posted May 10, 2003 Posted May 10, 2003 as to the error you were getting its because XP dont like drastic changes i had the same problem you just have to install in the comp that the hdd is going to live in until next format
