Wd Or Seagate?

I know this is the same as the which is better , Ford or Chevy question, but I just wanted another opinion. My 200 gig WD is failing. Right now it is set to pio and I cannot change it. Check disc started up the other day and found a bunch of errors on it. It fixed them but gave me some found000 folders. I transfered the data to another drive for now so nothing was lost. This drive is 2 weeks over 3 years old so it is just out of warranty. This is the second time that a WD has failed on me in about 5 years. I do not need a big drive, 200 to 350 is what I was looking for. What I do want is a reliable drive. It is a toss up between WD and Seagate. I have never owned a Seagate but some of the reviews at NewEgg make it sound better than the WD's. Price wise the Seagate's are about the same as the WD's. Is there a site that I can go to to read unbiased reviews about hard drives? I try not to reley on NewEgg reviews to much. Thanks for reading this far. I value all the advise I get from OCC because you guys are my mentors.

I think it is really just preference, people hear good things about one while someone else might have heard bad things about another.

Atm i have a 250Gb Maxtor Diamondmax 21 and a 400Gb Seagate 7200.10 (maxtor just >1year, seagate ~4 months) Both seem to 'just work' and i have no compliants about either so you could try seagate if you want a change.

I've never had any trouble with Seagate driver (even those that are 10+ years old) and I've had a few WD drives die (ranging from a year to 6 years old).

WD tends to be pretty good as does Seagate but I lean towards Seagate and Hitachi these days when looking for new drives.

I've been using WD for a while now and I've never had a problem. I had a Seagate on an older rig I didn't have any major problems (although the drive did start making a clicking noise after a few years but it never crashed). However I used to build custom machines for other people and I do remember getting a few DOA Seagate drives. Also, the majority of the machines I've had to fix due to HDD crashes seemed to be Seagate drives (or random brands other than WD). After that I switched to WD, something about their drives just seem more reliable in my experience.

I've heard horror stories about all the HDD manufactures though. I think reading the reviews on new-egg give a slanted picture because people either love the product or hate it and half the people don't even know what the hell they're talking about. One thing most people will agree on is that you shouldn't waste your money on any brand *other* than WD or Seagate. Aside from that, everyone has their own preference and/or horror stories so it can swing either way really.

Ok, so far Seagate is looking good to me. In the past when my WD failed, I just called them using a toll free number, gave them my serial number and credit card number, and a new drive was mailed out to me free of charge. When I got the new drive I used the package they sent and returned the defective drive free of shipping charges. If Seagate has this same policy then I will go Seagate. I liked the fact that WD replaced the drive with no cost to me at all. I am in shock looking at the prices today for drives. When I built my first 450meg computer I paid over $200 for a 20 gig hard drive. I see 500gig drives for under $100 today...times have changed.

Hitachi and Samsung are also very good.

Yeah, I forgot to mention Hitachi. I've heard a lot of good things but I've never actually owned one, so I wanted to speak from experience.

I've read mixed reviews on the Samsung's, although their other products are usually top notch.

All the seagates I've had have been pretty noisy which really bugs me. My WD drive (which came in an HP) is still doing well after about a year and a half, no problems yet. I personally buy WD whenever I can and so do my friends. I've never known one to fail.
