Spazz Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 Well just got my computer upgraded... Soyo K333 Dragon Ultra Plat edition... Athlon XP 2400+ (dunno if it's a thoroughbred, it came with the fan and heatsink) 512 megs PC2700 DDR RAM GeForce FX5200 128 meg vid card Well I actually have a few questions... When the computer first boots up and you get the bios junk, it says that it's an unknown processor type 2.0 ghz, how can I get it to read correctly? Running the "smart guardian" program it's saying that my cpu is running approx. 104F, CHA is running 90F... How can I cool it down some? Also, my AGP current voltage is 1.88V and it's red in color, I don't know jack about the voltages and stuff... But I assume my agp voltage is wrong? Also I talked to a techie guy at a comp store, and mentioned something about setting up something for the ram to get higher benchmarks... As I'm only getting 1060 right now, and I know for a fact that I should be getting at least 4k or more... What should I set the voltage setting to for my cpu? Any other tips to get this thing to run faster and cooler would be greatly appreciated...
justinal Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 go in the bios and turn the voltage down depending on what cpu youve got the voltage varies a little bit search the forum their is some good info on how to tell what type on processor it is if its a good oc etc. obviously hsf will cool it down alot my choice is a volcano 9 or 11 with a tornado fan on it some people like slk do some reading and you can make your own decision on that. any thing else we can heklp you with just ask. sVperbeast2k5 Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 Focus on results... not on temperatures... What makes you think that the temps are too high? For a stock XP2400, 104F is a good temperature. Mine runs fine at 129F... The core voltage should be around 1.65V and the AGP voltage should be between 1.2 and 1.8V. Few bios's have options for changing the AGP voltage, so if ya can't, don't worry about it.
Mercury Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 i would suggest flashing your bios, this would upgrade it along with resetting it to correct defaults... i dont know what stuff you changed, but it wasnt the best set-up sounds like to me
Spazz Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 I'd love to flash my bios, but unfortunately my floppy is scrood... It reads that it's there, but anytime I put a disk in it, it tells me that I don't have a disk in it, lol... oh well... another $15 to waste.... Right now I've got my cpu up to 2.1 but it seems unstable... Playing EQ it crashed with a blue screen... Well my wife was playing on my computer when it happened, so I don't know what the error was... I was reinstalling XP on her computer at the moment... ho hum... I'm just tryin to pretty much get the best out of this thing w/o putting alot more cash into it... I know a grand isn't much, but that's what I've put into this thing in the last 2 weeks... along with spending dang near a grand on my wife's computer as well... Thanks alot guys, and keep any info coming that ya can...
Propane Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 this is kinda off topic but how do you flash the bios using a floppy
Mercury Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 (edited) spazz, you may have your floppy cable in backwards and/or upside down... this allows your bios to read it (i think) but not to actually read disks in it kevin, you'll need 2 disks, a boot floppy and bios floppy. download a installable win98 boot disk (this doesnt change even if your windows version is not 98, you just need a command prompt on startup) then put the boot files on one floppy. download the program "awdflash.exe" onto the second disk, along with the new bios file (these can be found at the mobo manufacturer's site, make sure it is not zipped up on the second disk, it should be a .bin) boot up, change bios so floppy is first boot device, start up with boot disk, i think you hit shift+f5 to get to command prompt when the first "with/without cd support" menu pops up. once your in command prompt, type a: to get to your floppy drive (at this point, remove the boot floppy, insert bios floppy)... type "/dir" to see all the files on the bios floppy. now that you have the name of the new bios file visible, type "awdflash [bios file name].bin" and hit enter. this will bring up the awdflash program. you want to save your current bios to the disk, then just hit enter to flash your bios. make SURE you dont restart the computer when doing this, it has to complete or you will have to get your mobo reprogrammed thats about it, any questions are welcomed Edited May 6, 2003 by Mercury
mantis1230 Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 Well done, the only thing in addition is to put a /f after the .bin like this "awdflash kvx42aa7.bin /f". That is also the file that you probably need from soyo's web-site. I just recently got the KT-400 Ultra plat. Nice board but I can't seem to get it to OC at all. I'm running this set up: Soyo KT-400 Ultra Platinum Athlon 2800+XP Barton w/ CoolerMaster HHC-001 HSF (2) 60GB Seagate Barracuda HD (RAID-0) (2) 256MB Crucial PC2700 RAM LeadTek Ti4600 Ultra A250 Suggestions to OC'ing are highly wanted. Mercury Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 well that isnt necessary, and there are like 100 different commands you can put it... i think its pretty stupid if your too lazy to take 10 seconds to tell it to save and stuff... gosh first off, explain what you are doing to overclock, what are your temps, etc
mantis1230 Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 Temps are good, 44C running SETI for 6hrs in a warm room. I'm just trying to at least get 3000+XP speeds out of my 2800+XP Barton. I tried changing the ram to: tried just going to 170 instead of the 166. I changed the CAS to 2; bank interleave to 2 bank; Trp to 2T; Tras to 5T; CMD (Trvd) to 2T; and Burst to 8. Also, DRAM Command rate to 1T command and DRAM access time to 2T. But now I think I should have went up with the numbers, not down. Mercury Posted May 6, 2003 Posted May 6, 2003 use the guide i provide here to get the best possible overclock
Spazz Posted May 7, 2003 Posted May 7, 2003 Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to plug my floppy ide cables wrong, cuz they're notched, only one way to do it, ho hum...
