MSI NX8800GTX HD-OC vs Power Supply?

Hello there,

I have a pretty stable machine:

Intel Core 2 Due E6600

MOBO ASUS

2gb dual RAM 667 DDR2 Kingstom

MSI NX7900GT 256/256

Power Supply Thermaltake purepower 500w

it's the exact one in the review of OCC

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/thermaltaketwv500w/

I have this machine for over a year, and the machine NEVER freeze aside a lot of use in gaming and music production.

well, then I bought a new VGA, a MSI NX8800GTX HD-OC which in the manual requires a 450W power supply.

exact this one: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec....C&class=vga

since I don't have anything more than the basic in the machine, just one 120gb HD, a floopy and a SB Audigy, I though I'll not need more power.

well, after installed the new VGA the games started to freeze after few minutes of play (10-15 mins), I read about the beta drivers are better to theses new cards then I got 169.21 beta nvidia drivers, and I can play for more minutes, sometimes until 2-3 hours then the machine freeze.

always that freeze the audio stays right, the video simply turn into a screencshot, then anything respond anymore (keyboard, mouse...).

last week 169.21 beta drivers become the new official drivers, and grab them and installed... any change happens, the machine still freeze after some time, but still sometimes freezing in 10-15 minutes... seams that how much the game is old, more I can play without freeze... (probally because the use of the VGA I think)

COD4 & GRAW2 usually freeze fast

GRAW and BF2 freeze after few hours

Quake 2 per exemple never freeze...

I thought about temperature, installed everest monitor to know that and the top temperature of the VGA was 82

You definetly need a higher QUALITY PSU there, not necessarily higher wattage. The Thermaltake Purepower PSUs are not known to be the best out there, brands like PCP&C, OCZ, Silverstone or Enermax are much higher quality and will be much better units, also at the same wattage (500W).

I wouldn't put silverstone ANY better than TT. a tier 2 PSU maker.

besides the fact that some of thier models are rebadged coolermasters (have never dealt with so many PSU's running the 12v rail at 11.3-11.5v all the time).

Nor would I really call the entire OCZ line a top grade unit.

Antec, Enermx, Enlite, PCP&C, Tagan, and Super Micro (though ungodly expensive) top my list of units I've relied on. however as a note, the 8800 series of cards and Antec PSU's seem to have some strange issues.

The Thermaltake Toughpower PSUs are supposed to be good, although I wouldn't put one of those in my rig

Both of those PSUs are a great choice, but the GameXStream will still be a tad bit better ;)

@ bigred, the Thermaltake Toughpower PSUs might be decent, but the XS tiered list only puts the Toughpower >600W in that category. Silverstone is ranked in Tier 1 with the higher end units, and Tier 2 for the other units, so I definetly recommend them!

thanks for the explanation

so here are the prices:

OCZ600SXS R$ 480,00 (~US$240)

OCZ700GXSSLI R$ 650,00 (~US$325)

the prices over here are a lot more expensive than outhere, don't worry... :typing:

even with this big difference of prices worth get the OCZ700GXSSLI? I really don't want more surprises...

I want to 100% fix this freeze problem, even if I need to spend more money.

anyone with the same VGA? which PSU are you using?

thanks again for all the help

Holy crap!!! :O That's even more expensive than here in Europe! With that kind of a price difference, I would get the StealthXStream 600W, it should solve the problem just fine (unless you plan on going SLI).

yeah, the prices over here are really bad with everything electronic... at least the food is 10x more cheap than outhere... <_<

and yeah, I will not go SLI since also my MOBO doesn't have SLI support too (just 1 PCI-X slot)... one 8800GTX is enough for the machine, maybe in next one... :thumbs-up:

so I'll go for this PSU then...

thanks m8!

  • 4 weeks later...
Hello,

bought yesterday and installed this PSU:

but the problems remains the same... after play COD4 for few hours he freeze the video when the sound still fine.

again, happens with the latest games like GRAW2 a lot more... old games like BF2 happens in very rare moments...

in more old games like Medal of Honor or Quake II Evolved NEVER freezes....

if I replace my VGA for my old one, all games never freeze...

I really don't know what is happening... :(

any ideas?

thanks!

Is the machine overclocked? I would run some stability test likes othos, memtest, superpi etc. and see if the machine is indeed stable whether it is overclocked or not.
