New build; opinions please?

Okay, I'm planning on building a new computer. I'll be buying most of my parts on Boxing Day, and whatever I don't get then I will buy in January. This will basically be my first build, and I'd like it to last ~2 years.

This computer will be used mainly for gaming. However, I'll probably leave it hooked up to an existing 50" HDTV (1280x720 resolution) to double as a media center PC. As such, I will need a wireless keyboard, mouse, and headphones.

Here's what I have so far:

Processor: If I had to buy now, I would get the Q6600. However, with the newer CPUs coming out in January, I will probably wait until then.

Heatsink: Thermalright ULTRA-120 Extreme

Motherboard: Abit IP35 Pro (debating between this and an X38 motherboard. Any recommendations?)

Power Supply: OCZ GameXStream 700W

Memory: Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12

Video Card: Will probably buy an EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GT Superclocked. Hopefully, nVidea comes out with their 9 series before April so I can step up. :)

TV Tuner: Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1800 (haven't found a decent review on this... has anyone tried it?)

Hard Drive: Western Digital SE16 500GB SATA2 16MB Cache 8.9MS

Case: Antec P182

Case Fans: Scythe Slip Stream Kaze Jyuni 120MM Fan 1200RPM 68.5CFM 24DBA (2 for the case, 1 for the ULTRA-120)

DVD Writer: Samsung SH-S203N

Keyboard/Mouse: IOGear Long Range Wireless Keyboard & Optical Mouse w/Nano Shield Technology (really, I could care less about the "nano technology." I just need something with ~15 feet of range and no real issues. Any other suggestions?)

Headphones: Sennheiser RS146 Wireless RF Stereo Headphones

I welcome any comments/suggestions. :)

The way I look at it, all these motherboards out now, like the P35 or X38 is 45 nano compatable. So it doesn't hurt to buy now at all. The main reason to buy now is that December and early January is the PRIME best gaming months for gamers because of all the Holidays and latest releases. And for the Holidays your going to want to get your game on.

So what I would do, is get all that list your thinking about, but get a E6750 processor instead, because its cheap at around $170. And it can overclock past 3.4 easily. Easily. And for games, that will be as fast almost to the frame as the Q6600 clocked the same.

Then, next year, say next dec, upgrade to a new Penryn 45 chip that you can overclock up to 5 GHZ or something by that time.

There is no reason to wait, whatsoever.

Its time to get your game on now!

An E6750 at 3.4? Heh, you should be able to get 4.0! :P

New CPUs in January + New GPUs in February + X48 and 780i right around the corner = Don't buy now. ;)

Haha, thanks for the replies, guys. :)

The way I look at it is, the new CPU's are coming out in 1 month so I might as well wait for those. However, Boxing Day sales up in Canada are pretty big, and I'm sure I can save a bundle of money buying most of my other parts then. Besides, NCIX has great weekly sales, which means anything I don't buy on Boxing Day can wait until one of those sales in January. :D

The 780i's, from what I've read, are basically just a 680i with a PCIe bridge and so don't really seem to be worth it. The X48's seem to be pretty similar to the X38's. I'm not planning on going CF, so I don't need the dual PCIe x16 lanes. Thus, the P35 seems to be a good choice.

And yes, new GPU's in February... I was hoping they would come out sooner, but at least I can take advantage of EVGA's step up program if they come out within 3 months of my initial purchase.

Keep the replies coming, please! I want to make sure I haven't missed anything. :)

Following that logic it is ALWAYS never time to buy now, so give up and go live in a tree and play with squirrels lol

:thumbs-up: couldnt agree more if you think about waiting for whats around the corner the corner will never come.

you have two choices you purchase now or wait!

It all boils down to how desperate you are for a new build and whether your bragging rights outweigh you daily usage requirments.

Id wait and brag about the latest technology you have in you rig

You can't always keep waiting for the newest technology, but buying now would have been like buying an A64 two weeks before the Core2 was released. Despite what some people seem to think, there are times when it makes sense to wait. ;)
