Shin-Etsu X23

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any experience with Shin-Etsu X23 grease? I heard through the grapevine that it can supposedly improve CPU temps up to 4c over AS 5. Seems like a bold statement to me, but thought it might be worth testing (on something non-critical)...

Yeah, tried the Shin-Etsu on a couple of builds. I found the temps to be about the same as AS5. If I had to push-it, maybe 2c cooler. The big plus for the Shin-Etsu is that it is non-conductive (unlike the AS5). However, it is a real pain to apply. This stuff is incredibly thick and tends to agglomerate. Also, take a look at the data sheets (Microsi is the distributor for Shin Etsu in the US) regarding thickness. Too much of this will impede the heat dissipation so it needs to be a very thin layer (which given the nature of this material, is not easy). If you decide to try this, I recommend using one of those flexible plastic credit cards (like the ones you get from grocery or office supply stores for joining their frequent shopping programs) to spread the material. Hope this helps and good luck - please post if you find a better solution for applying.
