First build - good for slight Overclocking?

Recommended Posts

Hey all - Finally time to get rid of my old PC & about to pull the trigger on the following. Just wondering if this set up is good to go for stock or for slight overclocking? Any input is appreciated & sorry if this is in the wrong forum! Thanks!

GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R

E6850

2 gigs Corsair XMS2 PC2-8500

Thermaltake W0106RU 700 watt PSU

Sapphire radeon X1950XT 256mb video card

320gb seagate barracuda SATA HD

Cooler Master Centurion 5 case

Zalman CNPS 9700NT CPU cooler

$1180 after rebates including shipping.

Going cheap on the video card so I can get a second generation DX10 in the future. I have the OS already.

That should overclock well enough. Every board, memory and cpu is different. some people will get great overclocks and other will get terrible overclocks from the same hardware. Its the luck of the draw but that PC build has the potential to overclock well.

I'd still buy a 8800 series card though. They are the very best dx9 cards out and of course they are dx10 so you are ready when that first DX10 game rolls out and you pick it up. Crysis anyone? September....

Thats not a build thats good for "slight" overclocking.

That build is extremely uber for overclocking...

I agree on the 8800 card instead of ur current choice as well.

I was very hesitant on the video card. I was ready to go for a 8800GTX but felt that once DX10 games really start hitting the market that newer cards would be out that would be even better than the current 8800 series. I figured the 1950xt would tide me over for about a year.

I'm sure once I get the build finished I'll be back to seek help so I can do some over clocking to get the most out of this build. :)

Thanks a bunch!

He could wait for the 8900 or 9000 when they come out and then buy a DX10 card when the prices drop.

There are many "things" he could wait for..

Agreed. With that kind of thinking you'd never actually upgrade because you'd always be waiting for the next great thing to release.

I'd still buy a 8800GTS because its still a better DX9 card. the 320mb card is cheap too compared to the GTX.

by the time DX10 is main stream it's going to be shoved aside by DX11

I see no problem on not wasting the budget on a DX10 card to play DX9 games at frame rates that the human eye can't see over a far less expensive card.

corsair ram you want is 175.00

I would suggest Mushkin 8500 Ram @ 155.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820146677

Zalman fan 60.00

I would suggest

Zerotherm btf 90

34.99 after 10 mail rebate

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835887002

or

Arctic freezer pro 7

35.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835186134

that's a 35 dollar savings. For what I would consider better products.

The sapphire card is 165.00

an xfx 8600GTS XXX which is a DX10 Card and performs just as well as the 1950 you are looking at is 224.00

with the 35 dollars you'll save on the hs and ram it'll only be an extra 25 dollars to get you in to a DX10 card.

I would also like to add that Zalman's tech support and RMA are lousy. Even with me being the marketing director, I had called them on an issue with a cooler that my son has. I was told to call back because they were eating lunch.

So if they treat me that way, Hummm how about just an end user.

Thanks for the info! I went ahead and purchased the the items in my first post as there were rebates expiring on 7/31. I got the X1950XT with a $20 rebate and a $30 rebate on the RAM.

I understand that there's no way to chase technology such as video cards. I plan on buying the winner of the ATI vs Nvidia 2nd Gen. DX10 cards & living with that decision until I can't play new games anymore. (Pretty much what I did with my old system - buy it & don't look back)
