Multiplier randomly jumping between 6X (idle) and 9X (load). Is this

Recommended Posts

I have an e6600 and Asus P5B. Raised the FSB to 333 so the comp would run at 3ghz.

When I load up CPU-Z, it only shows a multiplier of 6X (1.99ghz)..but when I run a stress test, it jumps up to the proper 9X multiplier (2.997ghz) . I noticed the voltage also seems to change..??

Here are some pics...first one idle, second one stressed with Orthos.

Do all Core 2's normally drop down to a lower multiplier like this when the power isn't needed? Or do I have a defective chip?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

You can disable it in bios by disableing C1E and EIST.

Long list of things to do when OCIng a C2D.

1. Disable ‘AI Tuning’ for ASUS, ‘C.I.A.2’ for Gigabyte

2. Set PCI Express (PCIe) frequency @100Mhz (‘Auto’ for DS3/DS4/DQ6)

3. Set PCI frequency @33Mhz

4. Disable Hyperpath 3 (for P5W DH only)

5. Disable any ‘spread spectrum’

6. Disable Q-Fan (for ASUS only)

7. Disable ‘Limit CPUID Max to 3’

8. Disable any overvoltage protection

9. Disable ‘C1E’

10. Disable ‘EIST’

11. Disable Virtualization Technology

12. Disable No-Execute Memory Protect

13. Disable any other thing you don’t use

14. Do not enable any speed enhancements you see

Agree there, just edit the setting in bios and it will stop this from happening, thou i person leave it enabled, as its keeps the temp down when your not used full cpu. And only a slight delay on demand when you need to load the cpu.
