Ninja heatpipe hits capacitor - want to modify Ninja

I had my IHS off of my 3800X2 before and it worked fine except one of the heatpipes hit a capacitor more so when I lowered the Ninja on the CPU. (modded retention bracket etc )

 

I now have a new Opteron and am running it with the IHS on w/ a stock / UN-modified heatsink retention bracket. I did lap the IHS and it is better but I need a few more degrees cooler operation.

 

I want to remove the IHS on this CPU (I need to try to cool it just a bit) as well but do not want to "cramp" that capacitor as I did before. I feel as though I was pushing it with that capacitor tweaked as it was. (see pic)

 

So, I am looking for ways to modify the copper pipe on the Ninja.

I was thinking I could either try to Bend it or grind it back to let off the pressure on the capacitor.

 

Any ideas?

here is a picture of when I had the Ninja on my Naked 64X2, so this is what I will be dealing with (as far as clearances) with my naked Opteron.

Have you tried turning the Ninja 90 degrees? By doing this, you might find that you have the "long" orientation at present and that the "short" doesn't affect the caps. And I would advise modding the cap before you mess with the heatpipes...

Won't work. I wish it could.

 

It is the newer version Ninja and the mounting hardware only allows for the HS to be in only 2 of the 4 directions.

I have the newer version too, and it allowed for me to rotate 90 degrees. What's preventing you?

Probably the fact that he is using it with an AMD rig. The retention clip for it(by the newegg pick) only has screw holes allowing it to be mounted one way. Obviously that one way doesn't work for him.

I was just about to dig through more pics I have of it.

 

All I remeber is that it was not an option with the Socket 939.

That would explain it then. I don't use newegg (evidently) so I didn't know that.

 

In which case, I would consider bending that cap carefully rather than messing with heatpipes. If you cut it, it's not going to transfer heat.

Silverfox, all is not in vain.

 

you gave me the idea.

 

The ninja came with a socket Am2 mount . And awhile back I bought a retention bracket for socket 939 that accepts a socket Am2 heatsink. I was going to use it because it has 4 connection points rather than the 2 on s939. See photo

 

So I think with this conversion I can turn it 90 degrees.

 

 

Anyone see of any problems I might run into here?

The 4 clip retention bracket looks to be a little wider than the 939 one next to it from that angle. Check to make sure that it doesn't interfere with the caps. Other than that, it looks like it's gonna work.

 

 

I think so (it will work). However I was wrong I think about it being a socket Am2 bracket I have . I am looking in to it.

 

regardless, I think this hardware should work.

 

Both the brackets have the same footprint.

it looks very similar to the 939-to-478 bracket that Thermalright do for the XP-120 and other heatsinks... basically lets you use a 478 clip-on heatsink on a 939 board
