Upgrading Board And Ram Plz Help

Recommended Posts

I have a Kt3 ultra board now running a Amd 2200, with 1gig of Simpletech 2100 Memory.

I am selling my chip, board, and memory, and will be upgrading to the Biostar M7VIT Pro, Which I know is not the absoulte best board out there, but It supports 400MHZ memory, 8x Agp, which since I have had my Pny Geforce 4 4400, It has been always run in 4x mode ;-9, plus the price of the board was right ;-)

Anyway, I will also be upgrading my Chip to a 2600 +, and want to use 3200 DDR memory.

Now comes a couple of questions, since the whole memory situation has gone ridicules ;-))) It used to be you would either get Basic Pc133 Sdram, Or DDR 2100 Ram!! 2.5 or 2.0 cas, but it has been about a year since I upgraded last ;-)))))

Now I am hearing about Dual Channel Memory setups?? many different timing settings, using 3500 memory on a 400 board LOL it does not stop!!!!

I am still a 43 y old hard core computer Gamer (started with the original wolenstein ;-)) I play hard and often with games that would usually melt 80 percent of most normal computer user systems out there, and I want the right memory for the board!!

I can pick up two sticks of Geil 512 2.5 cas memory, for about 80 a piece, but what is all this talk about "dual Channel"? , Tighter timings, and using 3500 rated memory. Sure you can overclock some, but with a 2600+ WHY LOL

Can someome help this old fart, get up to date a little with the newer stuff out there, and is Geil the right way to go?

Thanks in advance!

Rick

get the lowest timings you can(if you have the money) also definetly get the dual channel ddr, it doubles the bandwidth of the ddr ram and greatly increases performance, also go with 3200 memory, definetly get the corsair twin bank xms system too, its made for the dual channel systems. also cas 2.0 is a lot better than cas 2.5, pc133 has been dead for a while now  stay away from geil, go with the top of the line. Also i would go with the asus a7n8x deluxe motherboard, or the epox 8rda+(i think), these are both very good boards, everyone here highly recommneds them, more the asus than the epox, i have the a7n8x deluxe and absolutley love it! heres a link for the dual channel corsair memory, this is some good stuff. Sorry for the brief answers but after a little searching the forums you should be able to find what you need, this is a topic that has been discussed many a time. If you have any more questions let us know :D

Ouch, I checked out Corsair and other Dual channel memory, sounds great, but I do not have Bill Gates bank account ;-) Well not yet anyway. Plus I already use the Pny Geforce 4 4400 Card, and the Asus has the Cheaper MX Chipset built into it, which I do not need.

I have decided to go with corsair 2.0 non dual channel memory, but the board I just got will only support 1 chip running at 400?? sort of lame, but oh well. The board will support 2 chips running at the 2700 speed

My question is would I get better perfromance using 1 512 3200 chip vs 2 x 512 2700 chips, both at the cas2 latency??

Thanks In advance
