sdy284 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 I hadn't heard that part.... not that it matters when you've already got data plans on 2 personal phones and voice only on 2 more cingulars and a nextel (yeah I have to carry 4 different phones and a pager at all times ) <-- in for pics of your belt with 4 phones & a pager

Kash Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 I dunno Clay, Cingular/AT&T is pretty popular up in the Northeast. The number of people I've seen with Cingular is just slightly lower than the number of people with Verizon. Yet one thing I've noticed is that Cingular customers complain less than Verizon customers do. Customer service tends to be better with Cingular and we don't have to worry about our phones being crippled and being stuck with Verizon's proprietary UI. And I've personally noticed that I get better reception than my Verizon buddies, especially in basements or subway stations. Speaking of Verizon's UI, I saw a parody of what Verizon would have done had it gotten its hands on the iPhone:

Cingular has gained in the Northeast, but like you said, Verizon is still majority (and as such, when your friends have Verizon, you want to stick with it so calls are free at all times). I've never had a problem with reception compared to Cingular users. The only prob with Verizon, is like you said, proprietary UI, but I don't really care about games to give a crap. I always loved able to talk on the phone on LIRR, even when it went under water...don't know if Cingular gets reception down there now, but they didn't used to when I worked in the city. Kash Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 The free within network calling is definitely one of the main reasons people go with Verizon. Granted, you can do the same with Cingular/AT&T, but Verizon started it first, so combined with the better reception at the time, it was the obvious choice to go with. It's not so much games that are crippled as it is stuff like loading your own ringtones or using the Bluetooth for anything more than a headset. With my phone, I can use Bluetooth to transfer files and to hook it up to my laptop to use Cingular's data network (especially helpful in areas with no WiFi). Plus, I find the Verizon UI to be horribly slow compared to the stock interfaces, which is saying quite a bit since Motorola's UI sucks too
nan0click Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Apple could theoretically release a V2 that's CDMA depending on the stipulations of the contract because even unlocking an iPhone won't let it work on Verizon. Cingular/AT&T use SIM cards on a on a GPRS 950 band (that's close right?), and Verizon's phones are CDMA, meaning they don't take SIM cards, its all set up by the carrier. Nextel/Sprint is CDMA too I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, but T-Mobile uses SIM cards. I wish carriers could get their act together and standardize frequencies, then competition would be focused on the quality of the plans instead of simply what phones they offer. That said, I love Cingular/AT&T, great coverage, at school, when we are downstairs, everyone with Verizon and MetroPCS complain about little or no service, but I am rarely without signal. Now all I need is a phone with 3G My problem with the iPhone is its lack of features, 3G, expandable memory, and a lot of other stuff. And personally I like feedback when I hit the keys, makes blind texting a lot easier, try texting and not looking at your phone when you cant run your fingers over the buttons. Oh $600 is too much for a locked, crippled phone, regardless of its "innovative" touch screen.
Kash Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Close, it's the 850 band And yes, T-Mobile uses GSM as well I didn't think the lack of 3G was going to be that big of a deal, but after getting my 8525 a couple days ago, I can see why the lack of 3G is a deal breaker for some. When you're using a full browser on the iPhone, every little bit of bandwidth counts. This is even more important when using your phone's data connection on your laptop. Yes, I know that the iPhone uses a technology that only loads the parts of the page you're interested in, but EDGE is still very slow. I couldn't imagine going back to it after using UMTS/HSDPA. virus Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Why is it, that its the same price as a PS3 but yet nobody is really complaining about the cost? theres no way in hell I would spend that much for it Oo. its cool and all but wow, id rather buy a Ps3 lol. don't get me wrong it looks sweet and I would own one but not for that kind of money, plus I think talking on it would just be weird. Guest ecthlipsis Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I sincerely hope this fails on every level. Apple has left a very sour taste in my mouth from their terrible, political-slander style ads. Watching that show that had both Gates and Jobs on at the same time made me hate them even more. Gates handled the topic of those ads very well, while Jobs through out a load of crap and tried to say they weren't attacking Microsoft and were all in good fun (to which Gates looked up and smiled). Unfortunately, this lame phone will probably sell wonderfully, as this is the lame iGeneration that feels they need everything trendy. They could list it for $1000 and it would probably still sell. Because of precedent. A $500-$600 device isn't unprecedented, but the same price for a console was ludicrous, especially in light of the much cheaper alternatives. Plus, the iPhone is being touted as more than just a phone, it's also an iPod. The first iPod was $400 and that sold really well, so tacking on a phone, Internet browsing, and a nifty user interface for only $100-$200 more doesn't sound so crazy. Don't get me wrong, I would never pay that much money for a single device, especially not such a high-profile one. If I were getting a less-known model, the high price might be justifiable because then I wouldn't be a target for theft.

The difference is simple...it's Apple's product, not Sony's. Don't get me wrong, both companies charge a premium simply because a product has their name on it, and both exude quality (for the most part), but for some reason, Sony is always a target (probably partially because of its music copy protection issue). Apple has always charged more for their products while offering less, so this is nothing new. I own an iPod, and love it, but if I didn't get it for free, I would have never bought it because there are cheaper alternatives that have more features, and an overall better value. Kash, I understand your rationale as to the pricing, but one thing you fail to consider is all the rebates that usually come with a phone. A phone may have an MSRP of $300, but after rebates, and contract signing, you can often get it for 0-$100. Almost nobody ever pays the MSRP. You think Apple/AT&T is going to do that for the iPhone? yeah, right. I don't know how you can say $500-600 is not unprecedented. Has anyone here ever paid more than $300 for a phone?
