Will This One Work?

Right now what I have is a Linksys router (NOT wireless) connected to the modem. Any computers that need internet hook up into the router via cat5 cables. What I wanted to know is can I buy a wireless router, that will hook into the regular router. And then buy this Linksys WUSB12 wireless card for my computer upstairs, and get internet... If you need me to explain anything in more detail, just ask! Thanks :P

ya i think you can do that. are you saying you want to hook a wireless router up to a wired router? you might want to see if Walmart or something has any wireless ones and just buy one there and test it and then take it back and go buy the one that you want from somewhere else cause Walmart will take anything back.

Thanks, will Walmart give full money back? Cause I don't want to get instore credit... I hope it does work though. Do you know of any stores that sell these USB network cards that aren't online only? Cause not many of the computer stores around here do...

that exactly what he's asking, I think you can buy ones with out a router built in, and their a few bucks cheaper, but not much, I just bought a new netgear one for 69 bucks the other day, and it's all silver and looks liek a flying disk, looks cool as crap

you only need one router, if you already have one which you do, get the wireless acess point. If you dont need the router these are better because they dont have to deal with anything but the wireless network. Also if what you have is a 4-port switch built into your router, the wap will take up a port, which you may or may not be willing to do. I personally have linksys wireless g router with 4port switch running my network and these are nice because since the wap is built in it wont take up a switch port. Basically, do what is best for you, if you cant give up that precious port on your router go with the wireless built into the router(the performance difference is negligable), but if you can give up a port, get a wireless access point. Also if you have a miniswitch or something you could daisy chain that switch onto the router and then put the wap on that, that way you would have more ports and a wap.

And if all my babbling confused you, heres a shorter answer.

If the router with wireless built in is around the same price as a wap(which they usually are) go with the router. Plus the router has another 4port switch built into it, so if you disable the gateway function, and the dhcp, and put it in router mode, it should worked awesome and have wireless built in.

And if it sounds like my choices are kind of contradicting themselves, they probably do. Basically there is a whole slew of choices and really it is up to you to choosse the one that suits you the best. This one could go so many ways.

p.s. never buy anything at walmart, they have a horrible selection of networking stuff, go to a best buy, or a frys or somewhere else, anywhere but walmart, ive never even seen good quality networking equipment at a walmart, and if you test out the stuff there, you will probably be disappointed. and stay away from belkin, go with linksys.

Hope this helps :D

I always buy linksys, anything networking or LAN related, is Linksys. What I have is actually just a 4 port dsl/cable router (I doubt there is a built in switch) but it is a linksys... So I think I will buy the Linksys WAP and the Linksys WUSB12 usb networking card. Hope that works!

Well I guess it does... and I just looked at PCClub.com and the only Linksys WAP was like $149.99! I was expecting maybe a max of $70! On top of that $150 I still have to buy the $60 USB Wireless Network Card! If it is going to cost me this much, I think I will look else where and maybe get a new motherboard or upgrade to Water Cooling. I'll just save the internet time for LAN parties. I am low on money and want to spend less than $100 getting this network hooked up. Thanks anyways though.
