Hello everyone,

I have a 250 watt PSU.

I want to buy a new graphics card.

What is the best graphics card I can get that will run on this power supply?

My system is currently as follows:-

P4 2 ghz

DVD drive

CD-RW drive

Floppy drive

80gb hard drive

Network interface card

Modem

Current graphics card is a Nvidia MX460

Thanks everyone.

I think the Radeon 9700 and 9500 are quite power hungry....so might push me over the edge on power :(

From what I can gather, the NVidia TI4200 (which is plenty good enough for me) should be OK with a 250W power supply. I am really just after a bit of confirmation before I go ahead and plug it in.

However, if I can get away with something better I will go for a higher spec card.

Thank you in advance.

You might run into some instability problems and ruin that PSU faster...

Check this bad boy out... i own it, and it does a GREAT JOB!

very kickin PSU... 520 watts for for that price... and its had great reviews. It also has 3 fans and a 3 way switch (med high and auto, auto being quiestest unless hot)

only thing is that the +5 and +12 might be just a hair low, but it does have an adjustable pot inside to raise these.

Thanks for the reply.

I am no expert at upgrades and about as good as I can manage is plugging in new cards.

Changing a PSU may be going just that bit too far for me.

Which is why I want a video card that will work with my existing PSU.

Cheers folks :)

you could probably run any of the older cards like the gf4's but the new radeons like the 9700 pro and the 9800 pro and the high end gffx require at least a 300 w. power supply, but i would say its time to upgrade and get at least a 400 w. ps. good luck :D

and changing a power supply is not very hard, you just unplug the old one and plug in the new one. Nothin to difficult about that. If you need any help installing anything just let us know, well be glad to help you out! :D

I know I should upgrade my PSU really, but I am not sure I would manage it without getting into a mess.

If a TI 4200 would work then I would be happy for the next year or so.

Thinking about it...I might take a look inside my PC and see how hard it would be to change the PSU.

I might be under-estimating my ability (hopefully).

You are all really great people :)

alright well if you feel its out of your reach theres not to much we can do about that :(

Anyway you shouldnt have any problems running a ti4200 but they are already at the end of their shelf life so i dont think you will be playing new games with it a year from now. But still, it is a fine decent card. :D

Thanks for all your help.

I took a look inside my PC and I am fairly convinced I could change the PSU :) Does not look all that hard.

You have also encouraged me that I could run a TI 4200 without any trouble.

At least I now know I have the choice of just getting a TI 4200...OR...upgrading my PSU and buying a better video card.

Its always nice to know what the options are and you guys have helped me find them out.

Thanks for all your comments.

Regards.
