Some_Guy_ Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 Hi I built a computer for a buddy of mine. I powered it up, and entered the SETUP utility. Then I noticed the floppy drive light was on solid - a reversed floppy cable. I powered it down and fixed the floppy cable problem. I turned it back on, and it seems to POST fine, gives the single beep, then after detecting the IDE drives (Maxtor Hard drive, Samsung DVD-ROM) it halts and says "CMOS checksum bad - defaults loaded. Press F1 to continue, or DEL to enter SETUP". The problem is, the keyboard doesn't seem to respond at all. All three lights (NumLock, CapsLock and ScrollLock) are on, and pressing DEL or F1 does nothing. Tried a different keyboard. Nothing. Tried clearing the CMOS with the jumper. Nothing. Tried reversing the floppy connector again, just for fun. Still didn't work. I can't get in to the CMOS setup at all. It's as if the keyboard controller fried or something. Does this happen? Does anybody have any other ideas? Motherboard: Biostar M6VCF, Award BIOS CPU: VIA C3 800 MHz (133*6)

Dave_189 Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 Hey you checked the actual ps2 to see if no pins ae dis-jointed or missing??? Otherwise very unusual
Some_Guy_ Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 Can a mod change the title to "keyboard not working" or "PS/2 ports not working"? Immediately after I posted this, it had to make me a liar and work. It worked for about 10 minutes while I was FDISking an so on, and then quit again. This morning I tried again, and it worked for about 2 mins then the NumLock light started flickering, and it quit again. I didn't check the mechanical connection of the PS/2 ports to the mobo yet. My mouse (logitech optical) doesn't light when it's plugged in to the PS/2 port either. It seems like they're both gone. andrusk Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 sounds like you have loose connections or something is fried, either that or if your cables have crinks in them that could cause a bad connection, other than that, im stumped! good luck! intel_inside Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 if you have a usb keybard you could try that to see if its the ps2 ports or not
Some_Guy_ Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 I checked the mechanical connection of the ports to the mobo, and they seem solid, so I guess something may be fried. I guess I'll be buying a USB keyboard for my buddy. This is really gonna blow the budget.

NyCUnDaGroUnD Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 I think the problem is in the keyboard. If u can post fine and u cant type anything then it must be the keyboard or u may have to enable usb keyboard in the bios. Just try some old keyboard to see if it works. andrusk Posted April 14, 2003 Posted April 14, 2003 so when the light on the floppy bezel is on all the time it means a cable is backwards? in short yes, it means the floppy cable is put on backwards, this is easy to happen since most floppy cables are not keyed like most ide cable, A+
Some_Guy_ Posted April 14, 2003 Posted April 14, 2003 I tried a new keyboard, and it didn't work either. The keyboard I'm using right now is the one I originally tried on it. It works fine. My mouse works fine too, and it didn't on this mobo. I think the problem is in the PS/2 Ports, but that seems like a strange problem. The CMOS has a setting "Halt on..." and the default setting is "all but keyboard error". I don't know why that is. It is Award BIOS. I set to to halt on all errors. Sometimes it stops and says "no keyboard present". I enaled the USB keyboard setting in the CMOS, but I need to check with my buddy about whether he'd rather pay more now and get a new keyboard and mouse, or if he'd rather wait a while so I can get a new board. andrusk Posted April 14, 2003 Posted April 14, 2003 Typically you would use the halt on all but "keyboard, floppy etc..." only if you knew there was something wrong with your system like purposely not having a floppy drive so that your system doesnt halt on every boot up, but i would say there is something wrong with your ps2 ports, maybe you just got a bad motherboard from the factory. Definetly i would try a usb keyboard and if you have a problem with that or if you dont, i would probably rma(return) the board if its not too late.
