Slk800 Vs The Volcano Series

My friend got the AMD XP1700+ with a Volcano 7+ (copper fins) and running the fan at medium speed he gets around 29-30 deg CEL.

I put my AMDXP1700+ back to stock clock freq. with a SLK800 with a Thermaltak Smart Fan 2 at Medium speed on the rheobus and I'm hitting 40 degs CEL.

All temps taken at IDLE and in same room. So..... whats the deal? Both systems got a good application of Arctic Silver III thermal compound. Argh!!!

So I did I waste my money on the SLK800??

Currently @ 2.1 GHz at 49 deg CEL. IDLE

Okay, thanks much! I cleaned the HS with some alcohol and the processor with alcohol, then applied the Artic Silver 3, as instructed on their website. And now I'm overclocked at 2.1 GHz running at 45 deg. CEL on IDLE, is that okay?

with my SK-7 (which is 1 step below the 800) and a tornado on low speed (quiet!), i got upper 20*s, lower 30*s... lapping wont make much differance, but the differance in mobos could do it. One might be less sensitive to temps, while one might be more, or both! Plus it also depends on the processor itself. Especialy if you are running a palamino and he has a T-bred B. Many factors... Trade heat sinks for a day... that can give you a pretty god idea of what the true problem would be, cuz you should be in the lower 30s, some 1-3* lower than your friend.
