calibruc Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 I have a Asus nforce2 and i just bought a watercooling system but i can't get the heatsink off of the mobo. i removed the little black tabs holding it on, but it feels like its glued on there and i'm afraid to break it. do i just have to pull on it til it comes off or do i use something to disolve whatever is holding it on? i obviously don't want to break and ruin the mobo so any advice? here are some pics
General912 Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 ok heres what you can do: the first option is to run you system with high sytem usage progs for a few hours. the second option which i think will work is that you can put the whole mobo into the frezzer im pretty sure you can do that but not sure. If you do either one it should come off a bit easier.
calibruc Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 does the freezer thing actually work? i don't have all my parts together yet cuz i'm in the middle of building this system, i don't even have a processor yet, so i can't really run programs on it

Trakfast11 Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 I have a Asus nforce2 and i just bought a watercooling system but i can't get the heatsink off of the mobo. i removed the little black tabs holding it on, but it feels like its glued on there and i'm afraid to break it. do i just have to pull on it til it comes off or do i use something to disolve whatever is holding it on? i obviously don't want to break and ruin the mobo so any advice? here are some pics Yeah, i had the same problem a month and 1/2 ago. Found that it was easier to get the heatsink off the northbridge of the motherboard by sliding a small portion of a credit card under the one corner of the heatsink. That will help protect you from damaging your motherboard and lets you use a After that i used a small philips headscrew driver. You will want to give yourself room. I ended up taking the whole motherboard out of the case when i did this. It will take some considerable pressure to pop it up by using the phillups like a wedge. If you have a graphics card with a heatsink attached with push pins, you migh want to try taking the heatsink off on that first. That helped get me more confident about taking the heatsink off the motherboard. The first time will be the hardest not only cause its your first time, but also because asus put a very strong thermal pad on there! i have heard about the putting your board in the freezer awhile and then trying to remove the heatsink. I have never tried that method before so really can't say how well it works. I'm guessing it might help out, although i'm not speaking from experience in that area. good luck! The first time is always the scariest. i wouldn't worry about the die too much, it is very intact with the mb. just make sure you don't scrap the motherboard's pcb (printed circuit board) which has all of the built-in connections to different parts of the motherboard. Let us know how it goes. gl
General912 Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 I think the frezzer will help losen the adhesive heck if mess it up you can always RMA it!
calibruc Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 (edited) alright, thanks, i'll try that, i'll let you know if the freezer thing helps also, what do i need to clean the adhesive off the northbridge, i've never taken off a heatsink before, but i assume theres gonna be residue Edited April 11, 2003 by calibruc
General912 Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 yeah just clean it up with alcohol
Trakfast11 Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 yeah, use some rubbing acohol or even some type of moist towelet that has alcohol and wipe it off of the northbridge. I used HandKleen, but there are a lot of other options that have alcohol that will work well too.
andrusk Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 also instead of sticking it in the freezer or running programs for hours you could just hold a hair dryer on it for a couple of minutes, that should work.
calibruc Posted April 11, 2003 Posted April 11, 2003 (edited) sounds good, thanks update::: the blowdryer worked like a charm it pulled right off after like 45 seconds, didn't even leave anything on the northbridge, it all stuck to the heatsink.
