razor Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Hiya, so I had the pleasure of putting together my new PC over Easter weekend (in sig), and something weird happened - or didnt happen - whenever the PC should have restarted (save+exit BIOS changes, Vista installation, OS restart button), it just shut off instead. To complete the restart, I have to flip the I/O switch on my PSU off and on, and then push the power button on the front of the case. Otherwise, the PC runs great, no hiccups (not OC'd at all yet), voltages + temps appear very normal. Questions: is it likely that the PSU is at fault for my restarting problem? considering very normal PC behavior, voltages, + temps - should it be safe to continue using the PSU either long term (no replacement) or short term (just until I get a new PSU)? thanks guys. Silverfox Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 just a thought, but are the switch pins the correct way around on the motherboard from the case?
razor Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 just a thought, but are the switch pins the correct way around on the motherboard from the case? yeah, I just checked all connections - everything was ok. I also found that I can restart once from Vista from my limited "normal" user account - but any further restarts on the normal account, and any restart attempt from the admin account cause the PC to just shut off. could I be looking at this from the wrong perspective - may be a Windows problem? Silverfox Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 if you are willing to reformat, it certainly cannot hurt one bit.
Son of Odin Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 I'd most likely find a different or official copy of Vista (assuming you downloaded it)
markiemrboo Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 (edited) It might be the PSU. It certainly doesn't seem like a Windows issue, as it does it outside of Windows too. I had a DFI NF4 board that worked OK for a few months, but then started showing symptoms similar to what you are describing. From an off state, it wouldn't turn on properly. It would just give me a blank screen. I could either hit reset a few times, or flip the off switch on the back of my PSU to off then on again, and it would boot, but not detect my DVD drive, so then I had to hit restart one last time and it was OK. It is probably my PSU, but I just RMA'd the board, got an EPoX (as I had good luck with my previous EPoX), and sold the replacement DFI on. I have not had an issues since See if you can borrow a PSU off a friend or something? razor Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Thanks everyone for the help/suggestions. It turned out to be the power supply malfunctioning - got lucky and found a clearance Ultra 700w XConnect at Tiger for $15, swapped out the Orion and everything works great. Odin, I do have an official copy of Vista - 100% legit.
HoLoDreaM Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Definitely check all power connections on the board and make sure they are secure
