Microsoft announces major recall of Windows Vista

Early this morning, Microsoft released a statment that their product, Windows Vista, is being recalled. This is due to a major flaw in the Kernal that was used for debuging purposes that would send a short email to an employee whenever a form was filled out with the information in the form. This employee, Elena Whitaker, has used the information gathered by this flaw to harvest 1000s of credit card numbers which she has been selling online for the past several months.

Microsoft asks that everyone who has installed Vista reformat their hard drive and reinstall XP or their previous operating system. Also, they are sending free copies of XP Home edition with a special installer menu to those who bought a desktop PC or laptop system with Vista pre installed. In addition, if anyone running Vista experiences credit card fraud, they ask that they send an email to [email protected] with any perterninet(sp) information.

For those running Microsoft Office 2007, Mircosoft has announced that they will release a patch which will allow compatibility with XP and 2000 to allow compatibility with documents that were created under the 2007 program set while Vista was installed.

I hope this is helpful information and that noone on here has to experience the troubles of credit card fraud.

There is no patch yet, Microsoft says that they are trying to figure out how to patch into Kernelspace (which is vastly different from how they normally patch, which is just modifying something like a DLL or EXE in Userspace). Right now, the only way to get around the problem is not submit forms with personal information or rollback. It mentioned on Microsofts knowledge base article (#1324001).
