odd problem

ok, im getting very frustrated

i built a computer for a friend of mine. pretty basic amd 3200+ 1 gb corsair ram 6600gt or 7600gt (dont remember, but it doesnt require an external power plug)

and a sony dvd burner 160 gb hdd, and 2 case fans

well, the computer runs fine, except the optical drive, it opens very slowly once or twice, and then doesnt at all.

i was using a 350 watt psu with a pretty weak 12v rail 15 amps or something

so i moved to a spare 380 i had, with 2 12v one 14 one 15 i think

its still doing it, do i need yet a bigger psu?

nope, that my friend is a direct result of using a sony (aka lite-on) drive. it's a hardware failure.

find yourself a CHEAP optorite (aka sanyo aka plextor) or a TSST (aka samsung or toshiba). you can't go wrong with these drives considering they're usually $25 to $40 tops.

thats what i thought to, but i put it my rig, with a 530 watt modular, and it works just fine, i actually just finished a DVD prior to this post and its playing in the regular DVD player i have hooked to the tv

its such a low power rig im surprised 380 isnt enough

yeah, there are two 80 mm, ones a green lit one that i had hangin around. even after i unplug both of those fans, it still wont work, then once i change the molex to a different one, it works a couple times, stops again. and right now, im letting him use my old one, and thats doing the same thing. id just imagine that 380 is enough, esp with dual 12v rails, even though they are low on amps

oops, didnt see the fans in the original post!

If you unplug the hard disk and use that molex on the drive, even though it wont boot up, will the drive open and close then? bit of a long-shot, but it's a VERY strange problem and clearly more than 'just' the optical drive. Does it do the same with NO IDE cable plugged into it?

im not sure about ide cable yet, ill have to check that out later. its just so weird, once i move around the molex connectors, it works if only the drive is plugged in, after a couple of times letting it post like that, it doesnt work anymore.

i only mention the IDE cable as sometimes i have found drives not to work for that reason. bizarre, indeed.

on the other off-chance, when you plug it into the 530w, is it a primary or secondary drive? might be worth checking. completely unlikely, but i've seen stranger.

hmm i never have the jumper on cable select. i use slave/master as appropriate. did you try the ide idea? long shot i know...the worst that can happen is you have to shell out $20 for a drive that is non-sony i suppose. see if you can get your money back and claim the drive is "faulty" ?
