Nodgiles Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I recently moved into a new place and my wife refuses to allow cat5 to be running through the house anymore so I have to go wireless. I have a 2 year old linksys wireless g WRT54GS with the latest firmware updated, and Im using the WMP54G wireless PCI adapter. Im running no security on the router (just for while Im testing) and Im getting horrible download speeds. I should get up to 12Mbs down and 1Mbs up (advertised) My current speeds are as follows: Wired cat5e: 7.8Mbs down 1Mbs up Wireless: 3.5Mbs down 1Mbs up Wireless succuredL 2.8Mbs down 1Mbs up This just doesnt seem right considering a wireless G router can transmit at 54Mbs. . . Do I really need to buy a wireless draft N router or what? Id expect a rate loss on wireless but to be losing half my download rate wired is . me off. I know theres a problem but I cant find it. Any ideas???
capthowdy575 Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 how far apart is the router form the computer. are there a lot of walls between the router and the computer. try moving the router and see if that helps any.
Hyper Threaded Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Sadly, that seems about right for standard 802.11g. My mum has to use wireless and gets about that much, as well. The only thing you can really do is get pre-N or equipment with MIMO, which is rather dear as it's new.
NCC10281982B Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Hmm, mine runs at max or sometimes 24Mb. As others have said range is a factor. Is the signal going from one end of the house to the other?
