maximo Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 (edited) I was reading some articles about HD's this weekend and it seems as though the IBM 60GXP Deskstar, which I have, is from what I've read an unreliable drive. First is this true, if it is I would like to know how to back up a hard drive? I have many pictures on there that would be devastating to loose. Could someone please help me? vyroburn Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 well first of all those hard drives are not UNRELIABLE. they just have a higher tendency to crap out on you than others.... what i would do is calculate how many things you would like to back up... then look at how much space it all takes up and then either transfer to another hard drive by setting it up as a slave drive or it is possible that you can burn cd's of your needed files.... always good to back up somthign i have never really done untill i lost 5 years worth of mp3's 20,000 pics of my traveling. hard to get software and many other things..... well best of luck to you man have a good times and dont stress about it just quiting anytime soon..... those black lists are kinda to scare people into buyig a new HD sort of a marketing stratigy
exeter_acres Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 I use the backup utility in WinXP (it IS available in the Home version, you just have to manually install it off of the CD) for specific files and Norton Ghost for full drive ghosting Not sure about IBM, but I had one and it died very quickly... luckily it was a slave
localguru Posted March 31, 2003 Posted March 31, 2003 ghosting sowftware can burn your entire hd onto cd's with about 2 to one compression. so if you have 3 gigs of data then it might take about 3-4 cd's but the only thing is it stores them with compression, so you cant pop in a cd, and take off one file at a time, you have to load the hole back up onto a had. so in you case, it would provide a good back up option, if the drive failed it would be a good back up. if you need software let me know.
