Which is better?

Recommended Posts

I have an MSI K7N2 Delta 2 FSR... which 3 ram slots.. which would be better for gaming 2 x 512mb in dual channel for 3 x 512 in single channel?

Hmm interesting question. Skt754 was still decently dependent on memory bandwidth so I guess it would really depend on the games your playing. For instance if you mainly playing BF2 you'd probably be better of with 1.5gb while other games that use less memory would obviously benefit from the larger bandwidth. Your best bet would be 2x1gb.

To be honest, most people don't really get much benefit out of dual channel. Sure, it's an improvement, but you'll only really see it in benchmarks. So if you'll be primarily gaming or just using it for menial tasks like listening to music, browsing the net, or watching videos, I'd say use all three sticks.

If you already own all three sticks, why don't you do try out both combinations and figure out which one works better for you. If you have only two sticks of 512MB, then I would suggest getting a 1GB stick so that you can still run dual-channel (I think nForce2 allowed this, not exactly sure)

it's not socket 754... it's socket A

generally with socket A, it's best to go with slots 2 and 3... obviously, dual channel is better than single channel, but you'll probably find that balanced dual channel on slots 2 and 3 only is better than anything else (from an overclocking/performance point of view)

you can go with unbalanced dual channel (slot 1 and 2 = 256mb each, slot 3 = 512mb) but because the timings are inherently different between different capacities, it's not usually very good for overclocking... the example i gave you might be able to get away with because semi-decent 512 sticks can keep tight timings.. but if you went to like 2x512, 1x1GB then you can understand how mismatched timings would start giving problems

also, synching an unbalanced dual channel setup is a mini nightmare for the motherboard...
