DVD Surround Sound System + PC = Possible?

Hey, I wanted to know if it's possible to hook up a DVD surround sound system to a PC. This is my system: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16856101004 with the built in sound card. My surround sound system is like a normal one that most people have, with the three connectors (L+R Audio + Video).

You can, but you might not get the results you desire. If you use the coaxial or optical S-PDIF outputs you will only get true surround sound when playing movies and games that support Dolby Digital or DTS. If you play games that use more traditional means of surround sound, you will only get stereo. This is because they use a crazy type of encoding that most home theater receivers do not use. I tried to do a similar thing with my computer, which uses a SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound card. The tech support there said that it is possible to get surround, IF you happen to find a miniplug headphone adapter that can separate the five channels (it has five black bands on the plug, whereas normal headphones have only 2 for stereo sound). I've tried looking high and low for that piece of hardware, and it was impossible for me to find. You might have better luck, though.

Sure it is possible. But like the guy said up there, you will have to use either coax or optical. Now since it's Realtek, you'll have a task at hand with trying to get that to output correctly. Be sure to check for the right inputs on the back of your sound system. I guess the only way to know would be buy the cables and see what works. I've never had any problems, but I have an xfi.

in response to the question, the red/white/yellow rca connections give you stereo audio only... are these the only connections? it doesn't sound like a "normal one most people have" to me... most surround systems I know of have 6-channel discrete analogue inputs and/or optical/coaxial S/PDIF digital inputs... not stereo inputs...

it might help if you posted the make, model, maybe a link to the surround system you have... there might be a way, like if your system can decode Dolby Surround or Pro-Logic you can send that down a stereo pair from your computer and have it decoded into something between regular stereo and discrete 5.1...

you didn't find it because it doesn't exist... and even if some crazy company makes one, the audigy 2 zs has a 3 pole jack for lineout1, 4 pole jack for lineout2, and 4 pole jack for lineout3... there is at least one detailed diagram in the Audigy2 ZS manual showing the channel assignments for the EIGHT channels of the Audigy2 ZS to the 3 lineout jacks

there is no 6 pole jack on the card... the tech support was making up a load of rubbish...

My friend uses a home entertainment system on his PC. He said he uses an AuzenTech 7.1 Sound card. I will have to get back to you on the exact model and his feedback on how well it works. He games a lot so I'm guessing it does fine.

You can get Dolby Pro Logic 1 + 2 via the standard stereo jack, But most AV receivers will have the discreet 5.1 Analogue inputs like the picture below, Creative make there own cable for this Here Also this cable be it a cheaper one is supplied with most Creative Surround speakers
