Mustang Upgrades

Alright, so my Christmas/Birthday/Eagle Scout present for my parents was a 2000 Mustang and I've been loving it! I've finally got the stickshift down to where I'm not stalling and it's pretty smooth now, so of course, I'm looking for more speed! So I've got a little less than 1k that I've saved up and I'd like to do some minor mods to it but don't know where to start. It's a v6, so I'm not expecting amazing improvements and all, but I'd like something nice. Preferrably I'd like performance over looks, but I'm thinking about $150 will be going into new headlights because the ones on it aren't all that nice, nothing that can be fixed on my own. But what I have been looking at is CAI, chip, exhaust, or possibly some rims and tires. Been looking at some Black 18x10 Bullitt Rims, but I think they may be a little pricey, but I've got an uncle who might be able to help me on that, but as I said, performance would be what I'm looking for... So, what do you guys think?

Air Intake, exhaust. Leave the chip until last because if you want to get one custom made its alot better to do it after the mods are done then to do it after the fact and have to do it twice.

You can also look at changing the mass air, Throttlebody injectors and so on there is so much to do.

But Air intake will give you a quick boost right away exhaust will also help you can get a dual kit for the V6 Flowmaster makes a nice one.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, the true duals from Flowmaster looked pretty nice. I was looking around a bit more and I think a short throw kit would probably make a huge difference considering I'm using that every time I use the car, haha, not to mention cleaning up the play in the shifter. But then there was a really nice Bilstein suspension kit... haha, doesn't matter what kind of modding it is, it's addicting!

thats the 4.6 modular motor, correct, 3 valve or 2 valve

if its 2 valve, i can recommend mods because my car has most of them.

Lemme go over a few basics

Dont get a cone filter, like a k and N cone, keep the stock intake, as the cones contaminate the MAF with oil, not good.

Chips: Go shop around for a DYNO TUNED chip, one where you get it tuned by somone, and you save that tune, and can experiment with others, something based off of SCT is GREAT. (Superchips Tuning)

Exhaust: I personally had one made for my car, becuase i plan to do some heavy modding, but if it is the 4.6, Cherrybomb Glasspacks sound so badass on them.

Tires: Seriously, i mean, if your going to look to dump money in other mods, grab a decent set of tires, winter tires and summer tires, swap to winter tires in the winter, vise versa. Really helps out ALOT, and can save alot of time and hassle.

I would personally check out the manifold in that car, beucase if it has a the crappy plastic collant crossover, you are in trouble.

Seriously, just clean the dang MAF, for a few guys over a TCCoA, no kidding, 15 horsepower by cleaning that thing.

And finally, dont get any ideas of superchargers unless you feel like upgrading to forged internals

Edit:

also, before doing rims, do me a favor, find out where your VSS is located (vehicle speed sensor), and if its in the tranny, you might as well get a chip at the same time as rims, as the rims will totally mess up the speedo calibration and make the car very odd shifting.

Second edit:

I just realized, you said you were planning on doing tranny work, im not sure if this applies to your tranny, but check out the j mod

Its a V6 meaning prob a 3.8 Liter

ignore all I said

Go swap a 5.4 in there, than, that will give you adaquete power (evil chuckle and looks over at sal with the 5.4 vic)

Seriously, v6 stangs are for driving, not speed, no offense, and just dont ever drop the revs in the car or it will sound crappy, i didnt even see the v6 part.

My reccomendation is just to keep it stock...sure it's a nice car and pretty quick, but you will be better off saving money spent on bolt-ons for a better car. V6 Mustangs are fast (I own a 98 myself) but I wouldn't throw anything more than a CAI on and save the rest for repairs/maintenance and when you can buy a faster car.

It'd be a lot cheaper to just sell the v6 and buy a GT instead of swapping to a v8. I'd stick with the v6 though, gas saver.

get v6 stang

save major money on insurance

swap the v8

how about holding off? my understanding is you're a new driver. if so don't invite the pandora's box of fun you're about to open.

it also sounds like you either plan to "try" and do the work yourself or pay someone to do it for you. I'd highly suggest not learning on a daily driver that you MUST rely on. wait on this kind of thing till you can afford a backup plan of sorts. and you've learned to control the car to begin with. I'd also suggest having a substantial cushion in your wallet (aka a steady job) and a backup vehicle before letting a mechanic loose on this project.

remember I didn't start doing major mods to my first vehicle till there was a 2nd one in the drive way with it... and it wasn't expected to get my but to work.

first of all, congratz to the present!

I would probably leave any external mods for now (personal preference though) and keep to the inside, so possibly the suspension kit you thought about, but I would go for something nice on the inside, like a sound system of some sort or comparable.

my 2 cents.
