firky Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 (edited) I was looking at goin to am2 but a lot of people told me on here that core 2 duo is the way to go. so i did and i got a core 2 duo rig and it kicks .. The intel e6600 can do 3.5ghz on air .. (this is the cpu i have) Take a look at this thred here it was originaly a question about psu size but I was pointed in the right direction! Ziggy54354 Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 (edited) get a core duo. May want to consider a x1950xt instead of that video card. More memory would be nice too probably. If money is an issue for the memory, drop the water cooling and just get quiet air cooling... the core 2's OC like crazy and don't get very hot even on stock. kingdingeling Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I agree with firky, Conroe is the way to go at the moment! Get a E6600, the EVGA 680i mainboard (or wait for the DFI variant, supposed to release VERY soon!), and the 7950GT and you'll be set! Comp Dude2 Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I vote core2 duo aswell, they also aren't too worried about ram latency timings which means you can drop them back a bit and go for frequency without losing proformance like you would on a am2 rig. firky Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I have to agree with dude2 because i have some low latencey ram and it runs just as good on loose timeings.. (i wish i knew this befor i bought the ram)
ccokeman Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Looks pretty solid for an AM2 rig. I will say that my C2D setup is far superior to my 3800X2 with the same video cards.
Uber Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Core2 AM2's are locked. and an E6600 will stomp am AM2.
zigen Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Core2 AM2's are locked. and an E6600 will stomp am AM2. hmmm seems like core2 is what lots of people like... what have people gotten for OC's on water for e6600's?
zigen Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 (edited) hmmm seems like core2 is what lots of people like... what have people gotten for OC's on water for e6600's? oh and whats the difference between the core2 duo's and the core 2 extreme? is it just like X2's vs FX's? all i've figured out was clock speed. and i just figured out the e6600 stock runs at 2.4... a 1.1ghz OC is achievable on air?!?!? stock is 266x9 correct? Comp Dude2 Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 The extreme versions all have unlocked multipliers All the conroe family uses 65nm cores so they produce less heat which means you can even get good clocks on stock cooling. Basically they are the fastest maintream processor atm.
sYstEmATiC Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 hmmm seems like core2 is what lots of people like... what have people gotten for OC's on water for e6600's? i dont have water but this can give you an idea of their oc'ing capabilities, as im running an e6600. i am currently using the stock cooler while at 3.2ghz with stock volts right now topping out at around 51C. I still havent hit a wall or had one hint of stability issues. i just have had prime95 and folding the last few days to make sure im stable. im going to raise it some more after i get off work today.
