CheeseMan42 Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Black Friday was good to me, but now I need a new power supply. The computer currently has a athlon xp 2500+, but will have the opteron 148 when i have enough money to buy a new motherboard, which I plan to overclock of course. I am going to need to power 8 hard drives and be able to handle the overclocking, but I do not plan on ever needing it for SLI. Apevia 680W Coolermaster 600W Antec NeoHE 550W Antec 650W If not one of these, then recommend another one in that price range
romeo55 Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 I can vouch for the Apevia listed, i have the same model and it has surprisingly held up VERY VERY well
Bleeble Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 None. I suggest an OCZ GameXStream (manufactured by FSP). Stick with a good brand name. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.....x=0&Go.y=
Ste Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 I reccomend the Hiper 580 Watt or This one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817128007
kingdingeling Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 agreed with Bleeble, the OCZ GameXtreem 600W should be a good one for your use, I would also recommend the Forton 600W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817104025) and this Silverstone (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817163112) The silverstone is known to be a BEAST, and the FSP is the same as the GameXtreem 600W from OCZ
Bleeble Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Wow, I thought the FSP would be cheaper than its OCZ-branded counterpart. The OCZ is actually $10 cheaper before the $18 mail-in rebate.
Nemo Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Take a serious look at the Silverstone power supplies as kingdingeling suggested - I have found them to be very stable and the rails right on the money: SilverStone (SST-ST56ZF) 560Watt Power Supply with Active PFC - $109.00 SilverStone (SST-ST60F) 600Watt Modular Power Supply with Active Power Factor Correction- NVIDIA SLI Certified $129.99 SilverStone (SST-ST65ZF) 650Watt Power Supply with Dual PCI-E 6 pin connectors, Dual PCI Express Connectors, Four Serial ATA Connectors and Active PFC (Power Factor Correction)- NVIDIA SLI Certified $129.
Nerm Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Startech makes a pretty sturdy budget PSU, but I wouldn't recommend it if any OCing is going to be done.
jammin Posted November 26, 2006 Posted November 26, 2006 (edited) Any one else think that looking at 600W+ PSUs for this seems a little overkill? Never going SLi, single core... sure 8 HDDs is a few but still. 500W FSP? You could probably even get away with a 450 if you aren't planning to stick a pretty high draw GPU in there. kingdingeling Posted November 26, 2006 Posted November 26, 2006 whoops, misread that, thought he said he was going SLI

Personally, I'd like to be able to carry it over to my next system, so I get more than what I need.
