Vaelen2001 Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 How is it done? If i don't know the persons real ip address how can i request to help them remotely? I mean yea i can have them go to www.whatsmyip.org but that only gives the modems ip address and if i type in thier router ip ( IE 192.168.1.100 ) it wouldnt connect to them anyways because the software wouldn't know how to go to the modem first then to the sub computer ( the computer at 192....) Basically my question is how do i use remote help to connect to a computer that has a IP address on a router instead of being directly connected to the DSL / Cable modem. --\/@eLeN2oo1
ClayMeow Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 There are many ways this can be done, either with port forwarding on the router, or changing the default port for RDC via a registry edit. The default port is 3389. Let's say the external IP is 69.69.69.69 and the internal IP of the computer you're trying to reach is 192.168.1.100 If it's the only computer you will need RDC to then all you have to do is set port 3389 to forward to 192.168.1.100. If you need multiple computers with RDC (like also 192.168.1.101), it'll depend on the capabilities of your router. You'll need to have an external port forwarded to a different internal port. In other words, you can set port 10001 to forward to port 3389 on 192.168.1.100 and port 10002 to forward to port 3389 on 192.168.1.101. In RDC, you'd type 69.69.69.69:10001 to get to 192.168.1.100 or 69.69.69.69:10002 to get to 192.168.1.101 The alternative way, as I mentioned, would be a registry edit, changing 3389 completely. Let me know if you need that described. It's not a dangerous regedit, but I'd rather not throw all this at you at once.
