That actually looks like it would protect a laptop fairly well...may have to make something like that to slide my notebook into while it's in my backpack.

cases like that aren't meant to protect against dropping. They're to protect while transporting in a backpack and such. Given that, seems like the foam was a bit thick so it would be bulky.

Agreed. I remember when I owned a Vaio P3. I would just dump it in my backpack and not care, but now I own a Gateway P4, and I put it in a case if I transport it. I guess it has more to do with the fact that I paid 1k for the gateway and only 300 for the Vaio.
