young-joseph Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Well, I ended up having to build my mom's new computer after all. I do not keep up on everything as much as I used to, so if you guys would review the parts I have picked out I would appreciate it. Keep in mind folks that this computer is for my mother. The main factors are stability, durability, longevity, and quiet. For the most part she does basic computing, she's not a newb but not a power user either. Case: Picked this one because it's quiet, has a PS and inexpensive http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16811129155 Mobo:Still not too many core 2 mobos out there. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16813128012 CPU: I like AMD but the speed and the price of these things are too good to pass. I know I could get the E6600 for $100 more, but that would put it over the budget. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16819115004 Memory: I have heard the GS3 have some problems with certain RAM, voltage issues and what not. Any advice on this part would be great. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16820144177 Display: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16824116011 Optical drive: Don't even bother to recommend a plextor or sony. I dislike them both. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16827106015 HDD: She doesnt need that much space. So these should do fine. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16822148107 Vid card: Wanted the AIW so we can get her old VHS to DVD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102685 Any advice is great guys, thanks
silkster Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 (edited) I would go with NEC instead of that crappy Lite-On. Also, don't you think this build is a little pricey for a mommy rig?? Why not go with a Sempron64 base build?? If you think they're slow, think again. Does she REALLY need an ATI X1900 AIW for backing up VHS or is that for you to play on the PC while mom is away?? I just did a wish list on a build on newegg that cost about $340 w/ Shipping included. More than enough power for your average mom while saving lots of cash for more important things. For backing up VHS I would recommend this product that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Edited October 3, 2006 by silkster
hardnrg Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 (edited) here's a tip don't just link to newegg... not everyone has the time or patience to click on like 12 links... if you just write something like: case: antec sonata 2 (manufacturer's link here) mobo: gigabyte ga-965p-ds3 (manufacturer's link here) ...etc... then people won't have to click on every single link to see what you are saying... i personally will not click on all your links Edited October 3, 2006 by hardnrg

SMeeD Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 wow man what the heck, your moms rig is gon be better than mines I thought the exact same thing after looking at those links. When an average mom needs a rig better than mine, Ill know when I need to upgrade.

Enyce2k9 Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 (edited) your mom will do better with a pentium II desktop. Edited October 4, 2006 by Enyce2k9
young-joseph Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 The reason I chose fairly high end parts is to prevent the need to upgrade for a matter of time. I realise this is more than she will need in most cases, but as I said, she's not a noob either. However, she wants this comp to last as long as her last one has (7years). I'm not going to build her some $300 POS empty box. So instead of telling me what my mom's computer needs are, how about we focus on what I really asked? Like memory concerns with that mobo. I am looking into a larger HDD and will look at the NEC. Thanks to those of you that really answered the quesion.
