Andrewr05 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 (edited) Yes it is a "STAR NUT", but be very very carefulas once you pull the cover off the platters of the HD are visible and open to contamination... Do touch or put/drop/blow anything onto the platter because your HD will fail!! IMHO you should do it with a few older drives first to get some experience, that way you do not completely ruin your more expensive HD's. *EDIT* 3 minutes too slow Edited August 17, 2006 by Andrewr05
martymcfly Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 What you will need for the screws is a T6 (Torx 6) screwdriver.
romeo55 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 in a 100% dust-free environment with a nasa suit on lol... most attempts fail... and if you get lucky, it'll last for 3 minutes then crash
SMeeD Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 I read a guide about it a while back. They suggest steaming up your bathroom to pull all the dust down and do the whole project in there.

Propane Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 would running some compressed computer part cleaner be good for it right before you seal it up or is that also going to contaminate it?
anthony Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Just remember, dust is over 5 times thicker than the distane between the read write heads and the platters.
fire_storm Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I wouldn't try it end up being a waste of time and you'd loose that hardrive.
DECwakeboarder Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 If you really want one...I'd try on an old HD and see how good you are. Blowing the dust off with an air can doesn't work, you just blow that dust and even more contaminants very quickly across the platters and internals.
