Put It Into Perspective.

Of course we're all screwed in the end.

If you really want to get depressed think about the fact that all the atoms in your body arn't actually touching, therefore do you exist? :P

The probability of any life surviving on Earth for a substantial period of time is extremely slim, wether it's our own fault and we blow everything the hell up, or there's a massive extinction event, it's unlikely that we'll live to see the planet destroyed. I wouldn't go worrying about it.

Shift happens :P

we also must remember, and this falls into the our greater place, is that we are only a part of nature. Nature got along nicely without us before we existed, and it will continue on its way without us. Same with the sun. Nothing is permanent, especially our place in the universe.

This is in no way depressing. In fact, it is the opposite. It highlights the fact that we must be do our best to make our stay here as positive as possible. However, you could also look at it in the opposite direction. Be as evil as you want, because in the end, it just doesn't matter. Religion has tried to instill a sense of good (let's leave out the negative aspects for this conversation) in people for that very purpose. And that is one lesson that we must follow. Especially if we want to extend our stay in the universe.

If you think that's weird.. try this... Protons + Neutrons are made up of quarks. Three quarks = matter. < 3 quarks = no matter.

and this sort of relates to this topic in a sense that aliens could kill us all:

let's face it all we are is a strange bacteria growing on a stone whirling in a mass of nothingness.

Even on a personal level, look at the house you live in and think what the person who lived there 5 generations ago had to say and what impact he made and that's precisely what the person who lives there 5 generations from now will know about you.

And don't take solace in religion it's a man made superstition designed to protect you from the above facts.

Can be a bit depressing really and then you have children and something somewhere falls into place, it's not so bad.....

And quarks are much more massive than protons :).

Million Dollah Question: How is this possible? Hint: e=mc2

And regarding the no matter thing: It's been hypothesised that quarks are composed of 1 dimensional strings. We know this as the Superstring Theory. However, it has very little to go on. As my teacher said: "In science, I don't view things as true or false, but as having evidence to support them or not. String theory has little evidence to support it's self."

Now, if they're 1D in a 3D dimension, how do they exist? Do they coexist within dimensions? If so, how do they do that? And does that mean they hold the secret to inter-dimensional quantum tunneling?

Now, while we're discussing quantum mechanics and hijacking Ste's thread, let's think about this some more. The duty of science is to test things to see if they're truly existant. For example: I'll drop a rock off of a building to see if gravity is existant. That's basic science. In today's world, we present hypothesis, and then look at/find more evidence regarding them. Whether or not people choose to accept it depends on how well the hypothesis and evidence is explained.

A prime example is evolution, which is hardly understood because of poor explanations in most books. In fact, Darwin defined it as "Adapation via natural selection." In that vague sense, it occurs all the time as a necessity to survival in the wild. However, people have come to view it as "Man from apes." or "Life out of slime." And this has led to much controversy.

Religion can not be confused as science, which is also why Intelligent Design shouldn't be taught as science. It does not allow for challenges, and defines everything as absolute. It's based out of ignorance and lack of better information, and has mainly been proven false.

But the "Big Bang" theory doesn't explain how it started, just what happened from it and forward.

It makes you think that intelligent design might have to co-exsist with evolution.

For interesting reading, google 'earth designed for giant squid'. There's so much evidence to support the fact that earth was designed for giant squid, it seems almost real....

Humans have an amazing ability of self preservation. Somehow or another we will find a way to get by. Look at technology in the last 10 years. 10 little years have brought so many new inventions its mind boggling.

Now imagine trying to think 1000 years into the future...it would be foolish to assume we wont have technology that today is just science fiction, which will make living in conditions which now seem impossible just everyday life.

Man its to bad our sun isn't 200 Times larger then it is. We would have front row Tickets to a supernova. We would only be able to enjoy it for a few seconds though. If only we lived to see something of such magnitude. <_<

And your first statement is what frustrates me the most. Science explains things gradually. Don't expect everything to be explained with one theory or hypothesis. The Big Bang theory was for how the universe came to be created, not how matter came to exist. Don't try changing around things :angry2:.

And, how about you give us the evidence that Earth was designed for giant squid? Because to me, it seems like Giant Squid adapted to life deep in the ocean, where they most likely evolved. And if the earth were designed for giant squid, it'd be disproving the principle of Intelligent Design, which claims that life was designed by a higher being because it's too complex for humans to comprehend. That's straight up ignorance, not science. If you want it to be taught in schools, put it in a class other than Science or Biology.

And now I'm trailing off topic...

Go sit on a nuke and detonate it. You should get roughly the same feeling of instantaneous vaporization.

And some of you guys are really depressing. I'd suggest you stop worrying about 'what could happen in fifty bagillionzillionquadroquidrillion years' and go sit in the park and watch the sun set. Or grab a friend and go for a walk. Have a little chat with your mom. Brother. Sister. Whomever. Enjoy the little things. Live your life and make a difference in the lives of the people around you now. Stop worrying about whether people in 150 years will remember you. Make the people you actually know remember you. Life isn't about being remembered by the people who come after you. It's about having fun and knowing people. If the world blows up tomorrow, at least you'll have enjoyed your time instead of withering away your time worrying about the end of the world. Time for a reality check kids.
