Are Ccfls Safe?

Tell me what you think about ccfl's in the pc and their inverters. Are they safe to use?

i just got a green sunbeam ccfl, and installed it. ive heard of the inverters exploding, so that kinda scares me. my question is, how many of you have ccfls and have you had any bad experiences with them? how safe do you guys think they are?

ps: im gonna be making a little steel box for the inverter to sit in, but until then, id like to know how safe they are.

edit: CCFL fans have been brought to my attention, might as well discuss those as well

I have had 3 Sets. 1 Of them, A cathode broke by itself, and the inverter melted. The second one, the Inverter Stoped working and almost melted.

I no longer have lights or any type of cathode, I do have two back up inverters that I never got to use because on the 3rd Set both lights stoped working and I decided to stop wasting money on them. :glare:

So I would say: Not safe at all and Made very cheaply.

by the inverter melting, to you mean exploded or just fizzed away. im asking if my expensive components are safe, because ive heard of inverters actually blowing up. my cathode will almost never be on, i have it wired to a switch in the front of the case. my final question: when the cathode IS on, is there any risk of something going boom and damagind the nearby components?

I mean that the internal components overheated and melted the surrounding plastic and the other conponents within the inverter.

I couldn't find the link, But About a year ago I saw this website where a Guy had his inverter blow up, right under his sound card and Video card. The pictures showed heavy damage to the sound card, burn marks on the case, Video card, motherboard and melted wires from the resulting fire. He stated that Motherboard, Video card and sound card were all trash afterwards.

I don't think its worth the risk. You can however put the inverter on the outside of the case. They get very hot.

heres the deal. the inverter makes NO heat when the cathode is off, and im gonna keep it off at all times except when im showing my pc off. i would still like some more info on this matter guys. thanks ste.

funny you should mention it. today my 4th inverter melted. took it apart, pcb board was browned by the resistors..

i blame my power supply for being too good for it :) but yea they are cheaply made, and could easily be considered a danger.. not from like exploding i don't think since they have a good plastic covering, but it could mess with your power supply that's for sure

mess with my power supply... do you mean like pooching it and damaging it beyond repair?

Yeah first time I tried to plug in my cathodes, I had the switch off. I turned on the computer and flipped the switch to the cathodes and my video card gave me an error saying the voltage had just dropped dramatically and it was going to underclock. Then my CCFL's went off. I turned off the computer and looked at the inverter and the plastic was melted and the PCB was all browned. They're not worth it. They're too cheap. Get some LED's or something.

well - i'm far from an electrician, but if something plugged in to the power supply fry's, that can't be good..

especially if the ground gets some juice or something..

never know.. anyone? dangers of an invertor going out to your PSU? remember when fans plugged into boards would short out and take the boar with it?? now power supplies, especially good quality ones can prolly take the hit, but there is a chance you could mess something up i would think.
