Would You Charge?

So a friend of mine from school wants me to build him a computer. He wants me to pick out the parts then he wants to order it and me to put it together and install windows and all that junk. Well when I asked him if he we give $50 for building it he flipped out. So what do you think you think I should go no charge or what?

heh, i'd charge 60... if he doesn't like it then fine, go else where and let him deal with the crappiness with pre-builts, he'll come back, same with car repairs, to get a new part installed a lot of times labor is more than the actual parts lol

Tell him $20 and let him watch and learn. Afterwards he'll be able to do it himself and he'll realize how much of a pain it can be.

:withstupid: Why isn't he doing it himself, the lazy butt.

If he should know how to do it himself I'd definitely be charging him as much as I could get away with.

Even though it may be easy, it still takes up your precious time doesn't it, which could be used for better things.

I personally wouldnt charge.. especially if it was a friend

I usually wouldn't charge but I usually don't sit there and pick out all the parts either and then have to build the whole thing. And we alright friends I don't really hang out with him outside of school to much and stuff it was like a close friend I usually wouldn't but I guess I consider him more of a classmate.

it would depend on how good of a friend he is. I've been helping friends for years for nothing. (one frind always showed his appretiation by grtting me some upgrades too)

but most that I helped constantly wanted more and more help. So I had no choice to start charging. you give them an inch they want the whole arm.

Depends on what kind of buddy he is. Generally I wouldn't charge to build a computer unless it was for business purposes, but he shouldn't have any problem paying you at least $20 just for your time. Hell, he'd be paying $200+ for some company to custom build him a rig. There's lots of care and liability that goes into building a computer. I hesitate to work on anyone's computers other than my own because there is so much that can go wrong (the main reason I decided not to go to medical school, I HATE liability).

Lol!, you guys are charging so little. The First PC I built for a someone I knew, I charged 100 Bucks to build. I also tried to charge my brother 100 Bucks When I Built his. But he only gave me 50, nothing I could do really. Ya, I know Im heartless. :D
