Ruenin Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 (edited) Ok ladies and gents, I'm looking to get off the ol' XP stuff and move up to AMD64. Question is, what am I looking for now? What's the best, current core? I'm not looking to spend a fortune on a chip, but I'll look at anything up to $200. I guess I wouldn't mind mobo suggestions too, though I'm currently partial to DFI. ClayMeow Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 For a $200 budget, the 3500+ is the best, which can be found for just around $200. A little more can get you a 3800+ though...may be worth it.
Ruenin Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I see a AMD64 3700+ San Diego on Newegg for $228 but the $3800+ Venice is nearly $300. Why the sudden price jump? They both have the 1GHz FSB and they're both 939 PGA.
Shadowfactor Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 (edited) Different clocks and well different Oc ability... but hey you can't beat 110 shipped for a 3500+ Edited December 27, 2005 by Shadowfactor

That's sort of the sweet spot right there, but if you have a $200 budget, then yeah, that's too much. the 3700 San Diego is nice though. I'm not sure it's OCing capabilities though, but it's got 1MB of L2. If you don't mind buying used though, $110 for a 3500+ won't be beat. Ruenin Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Just realized that this will end up costing me a lot more than it's worth. The problem is my video card; it's AGP. If I replace my mobo and intend to keep my video card, then I need to get another AGP mobo which severely limits my options, and I'm not shelling out another $400 on video card this year. Bummer, I was really psyched up for this.

cdoggown Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 MSI makes a nforce 4 board (Neo 3) that has both PCI Express and a half-assed AGP slot. IF you game you wont be happy though. It WILL get you by however until you get a PCI Express vid card in a couple months or whatever.
ClayMeow Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 I'd go with either what virus said or cdog. Don't throw out getting an a64 just beause you don't want to get a whole new system! You don't have to!

Kamikaze_Badger Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 DFI still doesn't have a socket 939 NF3 motherboard. And you don't need to spend $400 on a new vid card. My 6600GT does fine.
