GlimmerMan Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Hi guys, I am building a pc for a friend and i tried ocing it. At first it worked fine but now, windows screen loads @ boot and then hits a blue screen. It goes away so i dont have time to read it. I've looked for the bios option to disable a restart when an error occurs, but being a fairly old mobo, it doenst have that. I knew that a blue screen ment you clocked it too high etc, so i put it back to stock and it STILL gets a blue sreen. Also, i tried reinstalling windows (it was a fresh copy anyway) and i cant install it. says something about the .INF sytax being wrong on line. 473. i tried this on several XP disks and the same error comes up. have a screwed the cpu? by the way. I oced it from 2400 - 3000 and it wouldnt get past post. then i reset CMOS back to default it all worked fine. oced back to 2800... blue screen deluxe. specs: AMD XP 2400+ Gigabyte GA-7VA rev 1 random Kingston ValueRam -512mb TNT GF2 32mb EDIT - those numbers next to the first line of the post... have no idea how they got there + and i fixed a few spelling errors
Dr_Frankenstein Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 have you tried reinstalling after formatting the HD?
Encrypted_God Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 I am pointing fingers at the Specs. Paticularly the Ram.
BTSchnarfy Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Out of curiosity, are you actually putting it at 2.8GHz? Or are you running it at 2800+ speeds? Cause there is a big difference. Plus, cheap RAM and a GigaByte mobo won't get you too far.
Encrypted_God Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 I am pointing fingers at the Specs. Paticularly the Ram. 603541 I will repeat myself. AND..BTW putting it at 2.8GHz? Or are you running it at 2800+ speeds? Cause there is a big difference. That's a very good comment
cchalogamer Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Plus, cheap RAM and a GigaByte mobo won't get you too far. 603543 What the heck is that supposed to mean... http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=43547 But anyway back to that "2.4-2.8" comment....umm a 2800+ runs what ~2.08Ghz? actualyl 2083mhz, went to AMD's site so If you made it to 2.8...wow...which is to say i dont think you did. Anyway, try clearing cmos, unpluging power at the wall, hitting pwr button, removing cmos battery for 30+ mins, and putting it all back together after that. then cross your fingers and hit the pwr button again... Good luck.
Encrypted_God Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Shouldn't have to remove it for 30+ Minutes. 30+ Seconds would suffice.
GlimmerMan Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 I'll clear cmos again and see if it works.. maybe i just screwed somethiing up mega in the bios. Perhaps i should throw the dodgey HDD into my good pc, format it then try for a reinstall. I'll do all this tomorrow, 1:00am here and im tired (playing NS all night). By the way, the parts are left overs from my dads pc. hes only paying $300AUD for it (about $170-200 for you in the USA) so its not like hes getting a hectocogon Xeon server or anything (if they exist). EDIT: Found the problem.... Crappy ram. I threw my XMS in there and it boots properly. Can't get ANY overclock on it because its already unstable @ stock speeds. It ran Prime95 for about 7 hours then crashed.
