You should still have a record of the dates and milages when it was serviced... And now is as best a time as any to start learning about cars. Pick up a service manual from Kraigens or something, you should be able to further diagnose the problem if our suggestions don't work.

Many things will lead to this condition. However with the service engine soon light on it makes things easy. You can take the car to somewhere like AutoZone (not sure where your from) and they can run the dianogtic on the computer to get the proper fault and they don't charge you anything to do it. The good thing service engine soon lights are almost always sensors on the car that are/have gone bad. I am guessing the EGR valve, but that is just a guess. You can take the car back to the dealer and have them run it on the computer, but that will run you about $60 an hour. Go to AutoZone have them run it.

well as u may know there are three main elements to the engine that make it run: air, fuel, and a spark.....soooo check the spark plugs, check the carb/air intake, fuel injection....ummm and if u got an afternoon, give the cylinders, and piston heads a once over if nothing else works.....but if u have no idea about how a car engine looks i would suggest taking it to autozone.

At 80K miles there isn't much that he shouldn't replace.

For example, I have a similar car. I have a 1998 Ford Escort w/71K miles on it.

I recently had it in and had the following things done to it.

Oil Change and Filter Replaced

transmission fluid replaced and filter replaced.

Coolant changed and thermostat replaced

Brake fluid Changed and rear brake shoes Replaced.

Spark Wire and coolant Hoses Replaced.

PCV valve replaced

Fuel System cleaned.

Fuel Filter replaced.

If he hasn't done most of the fluid changes, he should...

As to your problem, I have very information On cars, so I am going to guess trans problem.

not much he shouldn't replace? it all depends on how the car was cared for :( I have already put in excess of 100,000 miles on my durango and it's only had oil changes, brakes and tires. still runs beatifully.

Sorry I ment fluid wise. Your right if they don't need to be changed then they don't but he should at least check them all, their levels and Quality..
