I was having a discussion with my co-worker at PetSmart (actually, it was more like me saying "Gawd! I can't wait for my 7800GT to get here!!") and we starting debating whether or not it's materialistic to want to have a better computer, just for games (then say like, having a slower computer, but still playing the same game, but with not as much quality).

So what do you think, elegant geek masses?

i voted no...because it's like a hobby in a way, actually, it is...and you can pour as much money as you want into it but you're not going to make a profit...it's kinda like a car, or whatever...i see materialistic views as "whoever has the most stuff when he dies, wins. but...i dunno, maybe it's just me.

To want anything which isn't necessary is materialistic by definition isn't it?

Therefore anyone who votes no deserves a slap.

It's all relative. Your definition of "necessary" may not be the same as mine or his. If one feels like they must be able to play games the way it's intended to be played (aka. max settings), then it's not materialistic.

It's materialistic when a non-gamer buys a videocard just for the sake of benching.
