Dual Monitor Gaming

Recommended Posts

Alright, I just set up a dual monitor config here and ran into a problem. When I play a game on my main monitor and have my chat programs open in the second when I click on the chat programs my game will minimize in the first window. Any way to prevent this? I thought it was possible to chat and game at the same time and thats why I went for this setup... Thanks

Well, although you can still see your chat programs, you can really only have 1 window active at a time. That's just Windows.

run your game in windowed mode, set the window size to whatever your monitor size is, and then just place it on one desktop. Then it won't minimize if you're doing stuff on the other one.

yep and also remember tht you take a FPS hit too. That's one reason my 7800GT doesnt always soudn as impressive to some...but hey it's renderign another 1280x1024 over here with my IMs, Teamspeak, media player, etc

Oh well, that's why i have 2GB of ram, no time at all to come out when you have 300mb of physical mem free (actually i have over a gig and a half free atm...)

Oh and not all games will minimize, runnign in a wondow will usualy eliminate the minimize problem too.

Yeah one last thing, nVidia drivers pwn ATI's for Dual display, the x850xt i used to have INSTANTLY pissed me off while i as running dual monitors with it . way to used to the ease and functionality of the nVidia drivers.

for some reason nothing minimize on me, some of its b/c of the game engine like doom3 it cant be minimized but Steam still doesnt unless im folding and gaming.

where i use to get 90fps in CSs benchmark now i get 77fps. just having another monitor going. it doesnt effect you that much but if you need all the Fps you can get smart idea to get another video card (PCI) or a better card.

Yeah, for you another pci video card would probably be a very wise decision to run im clients and the like.

Just out of curiousity, how does gaming on two monitors work? Do you have to alt-tab to get to the next monitor, or hold down a key and move the mouse to the next monitor?

I would also like to know this, I would think you would just alt-tab, I agree with the 2nd video card but I can see that may cause even more problems.

Well right now for some games, I have to alt-tab in order to even get the mouse to the other screen. In CS:S I tried to run it windowed... I got about 1FPS... Other games I click out of the game screen and it minimizes the game. Boy was I wrong in getting a second monitor... All I can see this being good for is when I'm video editing or picture editing I can throw something on the other screen instead of minimizing it, this isn't a gaming setup. I'm disappointed.

Thats odd...

I run a Dual Monitor setup, and I tested if there was ANY performance diffrence with 1 or 2 and the diffrence was about 1-2 FPS TOPS!

First I ran the System with JUST the esentials on, and 1 Monitor.

Then I ran it with Just the esentials but 2 monitors connected, and the diff was bout 1-2 FPS if that.

Then I disconnected #2 again, and this time started Media Player, MSN, and a couple of other programs b4 starting a Benchmark/Game.

Just had all this on 1 monitor.

Then done the same, but with 2 monitors, this time, putting all the other apps on monitor 2.

Of course the scores where lower than the first 2 runs.

But the diffrence in FPS between having 1 or 2 monitors was negligible!

I run an ATi Radeon X800XT PE btw.

Mayb its just nVidia cards that take a hit from having a second monitor on?

EDIT: one last thing, what do the DRIVERs have to do with Dual Monitoring??

All the do is either ENABLE it, or DISABLE it :S

Just ULTRAMon to custimise your Dual setup how you want it.

Cause the Drivers cant do any of the stuFF ULTRA Mon can.

Yeah, my system has no problem rendering the other window and I can play the game perfectly fine. I just can't access anything outside the game while I'm playing... so it's nice if you need to look at something, but other than that... well... save your money.
