Want To Run My Old Dell As Server...

Oki, first off, I have a 6-10 mb/s down, 1 mb/s up internet connection, and other servers (non web) running already.

Baisically, I want to use this to run maybe a 18 player sized BF2 or CS:S server, with teamspeak.

It is running a 9700SE video card, a P4 2.53 MNz processor, and 512mb of RAM using all two slots.

Should I just buy new RAM for it, or is it not powerful enough to be used as a game server?

Thanks,

noob

If it's not good enough, 24/7 FOLDING RIG! Yeah. Just need linux to reply to the PM I sent him a while ago asking for a name change. :)

thats Lots for a server, although it could use mroe RAM, and a server doesent need any video power, i would reccoment upping the RAM to a gig, and youll be fine. it might even do it with 512, although BF2 will lag a bit with lots of players at 512, so i would say a gig of ram and your ready to go.

I would not run an 18 man bf2 server on that 1mb connection.

If you've only got 2 slots for ram you may as well pull the 256's and go 2x1gb if your mobo will take it, but i still think no matter what your 1mb upstream connection will not be able to cope and the server will lag bad.

It will NEVER use 2 gigs of ram. 1 Gig is more then enough for this server.

I've got a kickass server for BF2 running in my basement right now... and old Intel P3 with 1 gig of ram. Upstream is just over 1.5 mb, and I can support 15 or so players comfortable, with latency in the low 10s - 20s. Not too shabby....
