JerrDogg77 Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 I am building a computer for a client, and they need ahigh end computer to do video production, and post audio production, they have a budget of $12,500. The problem is that I have no idea what kind of specs you would need to do that kind of work. So if you guys could post some hardware that would work out, that would be great. ClayMeow Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 video and audio production, it pains me to say, go with intel (ahhhhh)...okay, now that that's out of my system Sorry, I dunno what would be the best cpu to get, as I don't follow intel as closely. $12,500 though?! sweet lord, that's a lot of money. Would definitely go with at least a dual-cpu setup. I believe the xeons are up to 3.6GHz? You'll definitely want at least 2GB of RAM (the fastest the mobo can handle). You're probably better off going with 4GB. I'm not sure what would get you better timings, two 2GB sticks or four 1GB sticks (keep in mind, 2GB sticks only come in registered). RAM and the CPU(s) are the most important aspects for video and audio production. Since he's working on audio, you should probably also include one of those new Soundblaster X-Fi boards (the top one that has all the i/o's available). For harddrives, you'll need a lot of space (for the video) and also want speed. I'd say you'd probably want to go with some 15k Ultra 320 SCSI drives in a RAID 0+1 array (that's striping with mirroring). So you'd need at least 4 drives for that. The highest capacity 15k drives from what I've seen is ~147GB, so that'd give you close to 300GB of space. They're close to $1k a piece though, so you're talking $4k for the 4 harddrives alone. If you want more space you can either slap on a few more, or drop down to 10k drives which go up to 300GB apiece. I'm not sure how big of a difference it'll be between 10k and 15k. Videocards, I can't really help you...you're not talking about the gaming cards we're used to...you'd probably want to go with a workstation card (eg. http://www.nvidia.com/page/quadrofx_family.html ) That's all I can think of right now. Well, you'll probably want to get a dual-layer dvd burner as well, in case he wants to save stuff, or an external harddrive he can port around. JerrDogg77 Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 (edited) ok, now chances are, something isnt compatible with this, cause i sort of just threw it together, but i am basically trying to see what you guys think, and if im heading in the right direction.
