Got An Unlocked Piii 800, Now What?

Recommended Posts

I bought this CPU from a guy who claimed it was a PIII 933. It came with a board, and the multiplier was set at 7x, it ran at 7x133=933. Problem is, I needed a replacement CPU for a Gateway system that has no mulitplier adjustment!

So I tested it on one of my own systems. All multipliers from 3.0x to 8.0x worked! The thing is unlocked, that's for certain. Also, the glossy finish has been rubbed off the top of the pin grid, probably to remove the "Intel Confidential" label.

So now I'm stuck. I have a PIII that's unlocked and runs at 933MHz with it's default voltage of 1.65v. I haven't tried clocking it higher or raising the bus speed, but since it runs fine at 933/1.65v, I'm guessing that a raise in core voltage would push it well over 1GHz. This does me no good, as I need a LOCKED PIII 933 for this other system!

What to do?

Find a cheap P3 mobo that'll work with it. They're probably dirt cheap since everybody wants P4's now. Try a compatible one on PriceWatch.com or something. That's where I'd go next.
