10Gauge Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Hey if anyone is into overclocking do not and I repeat do not get this board. I put a vantec VGA cooler on the northbridge which allowed me to get a whopping 300Mghtz OC. When I know the rest of my system is capable of 2.7 stable. I tried to get 2.6 and turned the ram voltage up to 2.8. And It wouldn't boot. I hit the delete key to go into the bios to make changes and it froze and restarted about 3 times before I could get into the bios. I reset the cmos and took the battery out for over two hours. Still didn't boot. It wouldn't post at that point. I just got alot of beeps and it came down to the memory modules being bad. But I tried the sticks in another rig. Now i'm running same proc and ram on an agp 939 board with a 3dfxvoodoo3. So my question is. Can I rma the board and get a diff board. Or do I have to eat it cause I only had this board for like two weeks,.. and get a better board. If you guys think the board is shot? I'm not sure if I want to overclock anymore now anyway. But I probly still would. I have 100 bucks on a tight budget and I can't wait. I need my eye candy. My 7800 won't work on this current mobo. I'm asking for your advice on a good mobo. I was thinking MSI cause they are a little bit cheaper then DFI. And I'm not sure If I wanna go SLI again.
Guest FxXP Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Gigabyte K8N boards have been fussy with Corsair memory. It took a few different BIOS versions to get my board to work with it. All I can suggest is trying some older BIOS versions and see what happens.
10Gauge Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 That's a good idea but I think the board is dead. I can't get far enough to flash it. Good idea though.
romeo55 Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 not the first time i heard this... amd nforce 4 boards are very picky with ram... Try some different ram
10Gauge Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 (edited) I tried the samsung ddr400 ram that i had in my last rig. Still no go. Now I'm moboshopping and can't make up my mind. I read a review on a dfi UT nf4 and i noticed something about the board defaults at the lowest mem voltage of 2.9. Is that right or did someone not know what they were talking about? This is the board you can do the pencil trick to get the SLI to work. Also I think I might be too newB for it. Then I considered the msi neo4 plat sli. But have heard complaints about the bios not resetting right. Also I am trying to avoid gigabyte right now. Guest FxXP Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 The MSI works fine with Corsair, and it probably one of the few nForce3/4 lines that does. I was considering getting the Neo4-F, but I decided to try Gigabyte this time round.

And FxXP does your board have a northbridge cooler on it because that's a pretty good OC. That's alot more then I got with my GA-K8N. Even with the Samsung ram. Also I was reading customer reviews on new egg and someone said "The PCIe 4x slot can even fit a full PCIe 16x video card, and you can mod the board to "fake-SLI", which performs almost just as well." Did you guys ever hear that and if so is it true? *edit-I was wondering if you guys had a problem whith your cmos batteries draining prematureley on the msi boards because it seems to be a common issue. Guest FxXP Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 (edited) I have the newer revision of the K8NF-9 with the passive cooler. It comes with the A3 revision chipset, so I could mod it into an Ultra and then flash the board with a K8NF-9 Ultra BIOS if I wanted. As for the batteries dieing prematurely, get a new one. Lithium batteries can be on a shelf for 3+ years before they are slapped into a motherboard. I got the MSI K8N Neo4 F and so far it's working out really good. It hasn't crashed yet and I'm slowly OCing it everyday. My ram works really good in it. Right now I have the ram running at 480 speeds. 240x's 2..at stock volts. Temps are 30 idle and 38 load. I'm hoping to get this processor up to 2.8 because it already did 2.7 with my agp gigabyte board with the SAMSUNG ram.
