Jacket Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Alright, my computer blew up about a month ago due to a power failure (I know, I know). Anyways, I've gotten a backup running, but I'm looking at an upgrade/rebuild in the near future, and I have some questions. I'm also looking for some suggestions. From looking at a few of the other posts, it seems that the DFI NF4 UT SLI-DR is a pretty nifty board. Well, I don't really have any interests in getting in on the SLI, but I am interested in saving a few bucks. So, are some of the other non-SLI DFI NF4 boards pretty similar? Will I still get all of the razzle and dazzle out of a non-SLI board, save for the SLI-ness? Would it make more sense to save the money on the board and spend it on, say, a 7800GTX? Also, I'm wondering which sort of processor I should get. I'm thinking a 64 3200+, but only because money is tight. This will be put off until after the new year, so prices should (hopefully) drop. Thanks for the suggestions!
gunak87 Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 (edited) Get one really good card for now. In 6-12 months, if you're lacking in performance (which you shouldn't be, but IF) look into throwing in a second card. I bought two 6600GTs in August and put them in SLI and I wish I would've bought one 6800GT then so I could put in a second one now. Kamikaze_Badger Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 (edited) DFI NF4 UT . http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813136152 That can also be modded to SLI. And, it's the world's greatest overclocking board (MAKE SURE YOU READ THE ONLINE EXTENDED MANUAL!), so you can probably get to around 2.7 Ghz with your 3200+. And I would recommend just getting a 7800GT. They're only about $300 USD now. Cookieman123 Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 (edited) If you get one card now and upgrade with another one later you will only get about a 30FPS gain (in most situations). IMO this is not worth it, paying probably $150 for another 6800GT in a year is not worth a 30FPS gain. Edit: And to get future-proofed for SLI you would need a more expensive motherboard with two PCI Express x 16 slots, an expensive high wattage power supply, etc. It just doesn't look worth it to me. Kamikaze_Badger Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 He can get the Sunbeam 520w OUUP or whatever for ~$75, and the UT (pencil moddable to SLI) for $130, assuming he gets the LanParty. The Infinity is less. And that's just Newegg, I'm sure you can get some place cheaper using Froogle.
10Gauge Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Is it hard to do that pencil trick?
