nan0click Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 What's a good first programming language to learn? I have looked at Perl and PHP for web development, but maybe C++ would be better for a first language. I don't really have any idea what each programing language entails and GUI's, how do you create those, is that possible to be done in C++ and Perl or just C++. Perl and PHP would be nice to learn how to use (PHP w/ MySQL) because I could create things like shopping carts, etc. for a website, and would be more profitable, but C++ is also very useful in the Windows environment. Oh yeah, it has to be a good language in Windows, I don't know anything about linux other than the basics and don't want to bother with it now. Ste Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I would reccomend Java only because its so easy, at least to me.
Kamikaze_Badger Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 C, and nothing else. Java? Nope, no pointers in there, and you'll get too use to working with classes. C++? Once again, you'll be working with namespaces and classes, which can be hard to learn.
suchuwato Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I would start off with C or maybe VB.net, only Java if you feel a bit more capable (confuses the hell out of me )
martymcfly Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I would start off with English.

Nerm Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I would recommend Visual Basic because it is so stinking easy to learn. lol
cchalogamer Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I started with Java, easy language. If you want easy to get basics but useless QBASIC is great, but again...of ZERO USE (i really dont reccomend it unless you jsut suck at everything else and need the extra stepping stone. It's about as high level as you'll get). C seems like a good start, but it all really depends on what your trying to accomplish VB.net also seems very reasonable. nan0click Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Is it Visual Basic.NET, Visual Basic or Visual Basic Script, are they all different or are they interchangable? Any VBWhatever guru's here?
Kamikaze_Badger Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 If you want to do any real serious programming, VB is not the way to go, I'm sorry. Make it your second language, but don't start out with it. Bad habits galore.
